My Letter to the Local Paper [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

This is in response to news that the local sheriff is working with ICE.

To The Editor:

In 1966, when the Supreme Court decided Miranda v. Arizona, the entire country became familiar with the term "Reading Their Rights." Every TV police show, from The Mod Squad to Hawaii Five-0, to Colombo and Ironside, to name a few, included "Reading them their Rights" as part of the arrest process.

Now I admit I'm old, so the pride I remember feeling when my grandfather, dressed in his Deputy Sheriff uniform, strapped on his service pistol before heading off to work may be a bit old-fashioned. I've always considered law enforcement a dignified profession that serves the community. Since that same grandfather was the one who introduced me to a love of history, I can confidently say he would be horrified by the actions and demeanor of the people under the direction of ICE. Wearing masks, not wearing uniforms, and hiding identification are the hallmarks of the Secret Police or Gestapo. Tolerating their behavior is inexcusable. Partnership with ICE in any capacity, as reported by the Belknap County Sheriff, is unacceptable. We are better than this. This is not a liberal vs conservative or Democrat vs Republican issue. It’s a right vs wrong issue.

Silence is complicity. Every voice counts. Please be sure yours is included.
