Authoritarianism in Plain Sight [1]

When leaders break their oaths and institutions look the other way, democracy doesn’t die -- it’s dismantled.

I’ve been thinking a lot about what’s happening in American politics right now, and honestly, it’s really troubling. Every move Trump and his administration make seems to be pushing us toward the breakdown of our democracy and a shift toward authoritarian rule. What’s also alarming is that Congress and the Supreme Court aren’t stopping it; in many ways, they’re helping it happen right in front of us.

It’s hard to wrap your head around how this is possible. These are people who took an oath to protect the Constitution, but they’re watching democratic principles get dismantled. The truth is, corruption has gotten so bad in our government that it’s almost “business as usual.” The system has let the most greedy and power-hungry people rise to the top, and they’re chasing their own interests without care for truth or justice.

Consider the case of Representative LaMonica McIver, who has been charged but not arrested. Whether or not the charges are completely fair, it fits a pattern where political opponents are targeted and intimidated using the legal system. This kind of weaponization of justice is dangerous and sends a chilling message to anyone who dares to speak out.

We’re at a critical crossroads. This erosion of democracy isn’t just happening by accident — it’s deliberate, and it demands our attention and action. Staying silent isn’t an option anymore. We all need to stand up, speak out, and do what we can to protect the values and freedoms that make this country what it is.

If we don’t act now, we may soon look back wondering why we let this happen.
