I would like to introduce you to the Victory at Sea Video Series, created after the completion of World War 2 and broadcast, starting in 1952. I just rewatched my Victory at Sea CDs that I bought years ago at a Cracker Barrel restaurant. I remember sneaking out of bed to watch it when my parents watched this series on TV in the 50’s.
Victory at Sea is a documentary television series about warfare in general during World War II, and naval warfare in particular, as well as the use of industry in warfare.[1] It was broadcast by NBC in the United States during 1952–53.
Many of the greatest generation have already passed, and fewer and fewer people like me in this country even have memory of these events.
x YouTube Video
Here is episode one. It is now on Youtube. There are 26 episodes. The music is world famous. This series is primarily a Navy series, but does cover land events in both Europe and the Pacific, including many scenes from German , Italian, Japanese (axis) and allied country sources.
Warning! Many pictures of dead and wounded on all sides.
These are very graphic videos, showing the suffering and determination of the allied soldiers, sailors and airmen who brought victory to the allied countries in the pursuit of world freedom, as well as the aims of Germany and Japan to expand their sphere of influence by force.
This film was made by the Department of the Navy. Therefore there are many scenes of navel ships and battles.
This first episode noted the many mariners and seamen that were lost to German submarines while taking Lend Lease supplies to England and Russia before the Pearl Harbor attack. In the opening scenes:
“War has begun, ships are sinking, men are dying. It is September, nineteen hundred and thirty nine.
Some may think of this as a propaganda film, which it is to an extent. The video of the Red Army retaking Sevastopol definitely looks like a Communist propaganda war movie.
Some things that I noticed about this series this time that I never thought of before was that it stresses the importance of logistics and the dynamic war production of the US after the Pearl Harbor attack which IMO would never have happened except for the fact that the US was not bombed due to being separated from the war by 2 oceans.
I often tell people that I was born 2 days after VJ day. It is extremely rare that I don’t have to explain to someone what VJ day is.
In a generation that has seems to have no clue about world history or VE day and VJ day, I highly recommend this series it to all.
