Welcome to Street Prophets Sunday Coffee Hour. This is an open thread so grab something to drink and sit a spell and let us know what is new with you. I love to read. Here are some of my favorite authors.
Stephen King has many books I've liked. He has restored over 400 pages to The Stand making it 1,153 pages long in the paperback form. It is worth it. I think it is one of the best apocalyptic books out there. I also recommend Salem's Lot. It is a great vampire book.
Amy Tan is a Chinese American author. She writes beautifully about her heritage and being part of both worlds. The Joy Luck Club tells the story of a group of friends and the cross cultures. Saving Fish From Drowning follows Bibi Chen who is recently deceased as she follows the lives of friends during a trip to Burma.
Anne Perry has two series that I follow. William Monk is a private investigator who has lost his memory. He divides his time into solving problems for his clients and trying to discover who he is. Face of a Stranger introduces him. Her other series features Thomas and Charlotte Pitt. He is a police detective who becomes a government inspector whose talent is used by even Queen Victoria. We first meet him in Cater Street Hangman. One of his latest cases involves the crown in Murder on the Serpentine.
Rhys Bowen has three series that I follow. Her Royal Spyness follows the story of Lady Georgie who has the title but no money. Queen Mary frequently uses her to spy on her wayward son Edward and his paramore Wallis Simpson. Her Molly Murphy series follows an Irish immigrant in New York City at the turn of the 20th century. Molly is feisty, independent and the proud owner of a detective agency. One of the books in the series is Death of Riley. Her Evan Evens series takes place in Scotland and features a local policeman. One of the books is Death of a Greeneyed Monster.
Sharyn McCrumb is a fascinating writer. Her Elizabeth McPherson books feature an anglophile from Virginia in books like Highland Laddie Gone. She also does moving novels and mysteries set in Appalachia such as Tom Dooley.
I was privileged to have email conversations with the late Father Andrew Greeley. His detective priest Father Blackie is a delight. Father Greeley in books like Wages on Sin also explored the world of Catholics in Chicago which is where he called home.
No one does conspiracy like Dan Brown. His The DaVinci Code introduces us to Robert Langdon a scholar who gets thrust into dangerous situations. He also has thrillers like Deception Point which deals with NASA, possible alien life, a government cover-up and just how far they will go to hide the truth.
Carolyn Hart has three series I follow. Death on Demand is not only the mystery bookstore setting but an introduction to Annie and Max Darling who get caught up in mysteries. My favorite character has to be Laurel, Max's mother. She has a middle aged detective named Henry O with whom I really resonate. She uses her intelligence to solve mysteries such as Dead Man's Island. Perhaps her funniest character is the newly dead ghost Bailey Ruth. She fumbles her way in trying to help the living as in Ghost at Work.
Of course there are the classics led by Agatha Christie. I have a perfect record of not being able to solve any of her mysteries. I also have read the Sherlock Holmes stories with one of my favorite characters Doctor John Watson.
Okay that should keep you busy reading. Let me know who you like to read.
