Hey Guys, How Am I Supposed To Know Which Story To Fix? Updated. [1]

This morning, at 4 A.M. my time, two messages were sent to my email account — not Kosmail, email.

I’m pretty sure I was sound asleep when this happened...

The messages asked me to replace images in two diaries here, because the image owner[s] had removed them from the library. One image used twice? Two different ones? No idea.

So it’s the Sunday before Memorial Day, and it’s four o’clock in the morning my time, when I get messages about this sent to me.

I woke up around 6:30 A.M. with no idea, of course, that this had happened. It’s an old email account, and it doesn’t ping my phone and I don’t have Alexa and if I did I’d shut that stuff off to sleep anyway.

I try to check that email account daily — don’t always, but managed it today — and by luck I looked at it before noon. Found the messages but it was already too late. There were no diary titles or dates in the messages, just two links, which turned out to be dead [Access denied].

After I posted an eariler, panic-stricken version of this tale, someone commented to inform me that those links were to the diaries, so apparently the diaries themselves were removed. Before I could fix them. Before I even knew they needed fixing.

Just keep in mind that all this is happening

on the Sunday before a Federal Holiday

within eight hours of notices being sent to an email account that does not alert me when new messages arrive,

said notices having been sent, again, at FOUR IN THE MORNING MY TIME.

[Did we hire JFK Jr. and DOGE to handle this? Feels like it.]

Now, I watched a popular diary author here being warned about using images that were apparently not OK for the site to use, because of licensing, not subject matter, a few years back. Eventually, she was banned.

There was a protest diary about that banning, with a lot of comments. She didn’t write it, she’d already been banned. Point is, it was discussed.

Because of that, it was a while before I wrote any diaries here. And I’ve tried to avoid using embargoed images, and I thought I was managing it.

But I can’t possibly be expected to predict that someone will upload an image here, label it as OK for DK Use, then change their mind about that at some later date.

Since I don’t own a retrospectroscope, I just took all my diaries down.

I could edit them to remove all images, but there’s no guarantee, is there, that I’d get the right images out of them in time, before someone else decided to pull their permissions.

And besides, I use images in my comments, too, to give hugs and flowers, among other things. Those, I can’t edit, so if those images become Streng Verboten at 4 A.M., I’m just stuck with it.

Sorry, guys. I know you will miss the diaries. I am going to miss them too, and your mostly wonderful comments.

It’s a I Just Found Out That Being A Regular Contributor Here Is Unsafe Even If I Use Approved Images diary. I won’t be able to contribute further diaries here. It’s not safe.

And to the fellow in comments who called me a whiner, I wasn’t whining, I was TERRIFIED. Learn the difference. [And some compassion, for God’s sake.]
