Still Think Democrats Aren't Fighting? Introducing Joe Neguse [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-05-23

Joe Neguse represents Colorado’s Second Congressional District. He was one of many exceptional members of the House, including Lauren Underwood, Lucy McBath, Sharice Davids, Lizzie Fletcher, Katie Porter, Stephen Horsford, Alexandra Occasio-Cortez, Sean Caster and Mike Levin, who gained House seats in 2018.

Joe Neguse quickly earned the respect of his Democratic colleagues. Like Lauren Underwood and Shontel Brown, he is a an effective legislator focused on passing legislation. He was named one of the most effective lawmakers in the country by the nonpartisan Center for Effective Lawmaking. He has had 19 of his bills signed into law including, “legislation to preserve Colorado’s forests and public lands, protect consumers, expand opportunities for small businesses, invest in rural schools and mountain economies, and protect local wildlife” (joeforcolorado.com/...).

The Democrats completely overhauled the House leadership after 2022. Gone are Nancy Pelosi, Jim Clyburn, and Steny Hoyer. In their place are Hakeem Jeffries, Kathryne Clark, Pete Aguilar, Ted Lieu and Joe Neguse. In 2024, the respect he earned from Democratic colleagues put him on the Democrats House Leadership team as Assistant to the Minority Leader. At just forty years of age, he is the Leadership’s youngest member.

Joe Neguse’s parents fled war-torn Eritrea over forty years ago to start a new life in the United States. “Their experience motivated Joe to be an active participant in our democracy at an early age, and to give back through public service.” joeforcolorado.com/... He continued that fight as a member of the Colorado House of Representatives before being elected to Congress in 2018.

lpeacock also did a profile of Joe Neguse in March as part of her series on the Congressional Black Caucus. Here is a link if people want to read more about him. www.dailykos.com/...

So what has Joe Neguse been doing to fight back against Trump? Quite a lot, actually.

Many readers on this site may have first heard of him when the Front Page did a recent article, one in which inexplicably the headline did not name him nor did the attached photo show a picture of him, when he made Jim Jordan look like the idiot he is.

x NEGUSE: Why didn't you put 'nationwide' in this language? JORDAN: Well, we can look at the language NEGUSE: It's 6am! You're voting on this thing in like 10 hours. What are we talking about? — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2025-05-21T14:59:31.813Z

Exposing the hypocrisy, idiocy and corruption of the Republican Party has become somewhat of a specialty for this man. Here he is giving Newt Gingrich the “Jim Jordan treatment”.

x When federal judges blocked executive orders issued by President Biden, Newt Gingrich had no objection. But now that Donald Trump is President, he calls the same a “judicial coup d'état” 🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️🤷🏽‍♂️ — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-04-01T17:16:35.364Z

During the Rules Committee Hearing, he observed the irony of Republicans demanding work requirements for Medicaid users when they couldn’t even bother to remain on site for the committee hearing.

x The hearing on the Republicans’ budget bill began at 1:00 am. 12 hours later — and we’re still here. To our colleagues supposedly focused on “work requirements” — spare us the lectures when you won’t bother showing up to the hearing. — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-05-21T17:15:29.883Z

And, he made, according to the Huffington Post, Republican Representative “squirm” when challenged on the Trump regime’s tariff policy.

x Rep. Joe Neguse pressed Rep. John Joyce over why he's "not concerned" about the president's taxes on imports. — HuffPost (@huffpost.com) 2025-04-29T04:52:27.957Z

As I noted, Joe Neguse has earned the trust of his Democratic colleagues. He is the youngest member of the Democratic Leadership Team. More recently, he was given the responsibility of chairing their Litigation Task Force. This team is responsible for participating in suits against the Trump Regime. If you hear of Democrats winning in court and stopping Republican attempts to bypass the law, Joe Neguse played a leading role in that.

x 🚨🚨🚨 BREAKING: The Litigation Task Force & @housedemocrats.bsky.social joined the legal fight to protect the consumer financial protection bureau. And today, the U.S. District Court for D.C. BLOCKED Trump’s attempt to dismantle the agency. A huge victory for American consumers! — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-03-28T20:50:26.808Z

x 🚨🚨 Last month, ‪‪Rep. Jamie Raskin‬‬ and I were proud to lead the Litigation Task Force on an amicus brief opposing the dismantling of the Department of Education. Today, a federal court backed our efforts and ordered the Trump Administration to rehire wrongfully terminated employees! — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-05-22T21:40:32.461Z

During the Rules Committee Meeting, Joe Neguse and his colleagues on the Committee — Jim McGovern (ranking member), Mary Gay Scanlon and Teresa Leger Fernandez, worked for over twenty hours to slow down and confront Republicans over this horrible bill. Democratic Members of the House testified during the hearings and put forward over 500 amendments.

x Deeply proud of my Democratic colleagues on the Rules Committee. Starting literally at 1:00 am — and continuing for 21 hours straight — we exposed House Republican’s disastrous budget bill. Our work continues. — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-05-22T12:53:45.413Z

x It’s now hour 15 of the Rules Committee hearing and we’ve had enough of Republicans’ “magic math.” So, let me put this plainly — the Republican budget will increase the national deficit by trillions of dollars. Period. — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-05-21T20:55:45.508Z

During the Rules Committee hearings, Neguse called out Republicans on the Committee who refused to defend the bill, not understanding that silence asserts their complicity just as much as openly defending the bill does.

x "We are now in a position in which Republican colleagues are not allowed to say whether or not they support or oppose an amendment" -- bizarre scenes at the House Committee on Natural Resources as Republicans refuse to engage with Joe Neguse's questions & instead sit in silence — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) 2025-05-06T20:01:39.810Z

Joe Neguse has fought to ban members of Congress from trading in stocks. This has become especially important given the Trump regime’s obvious attempts to manipulate the market with their tariff announcements.

x I’ve led the charge to ban stock trading by Members of Congress for YEARS —with reformers on both sides of the aisle. The Speaker must put our bill on the Floor for a vote. Enough is enough! www.nytimes.com/2025/04/05/u... — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-04-10T12:02:50.288Z

Joe Negus understands the need to be in the community and the need to communicate the Democratic message to his district. The fight against Trump doesn’t just happen in Washington and in Committee meetings, it takes place in districts and in the Courts, too. Over the six years in which he has been their member of Congress, Joe Neguse has held over 100 town halls, including over ten since being re-elected in November 2024.

x My Republican colleagues haven’t held a single town-hall in Colorado this year — not one. Last night, we hosted our 9th! Many thanks to the folks in Eagle County for showing up & participating. — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-04-24T14:37:08.832Z

x Joe Neguse (D Colorado) wasn't afraid to have a town hall. Surprise guest, Senator Michael Bennet showed up as well and spoke to about 2,000 today in Louisville, CO. We are all democracy was a big message. It comes from your community up. Here he is talking about Bennet who voted against the CR. — Mountain Bird (@comountainbird.bsky.social) 2025-03-23T00:29:07.133Z

It also means meeting with local business groups and other local organizations to ensure they know he is listening to their concerns

x President Trump's tariff tax has forced Colorado’s small businesses to scramble for a new way forward. Earlier this week, I met with business leaders at the Boulder Chamber to hear firsthand about the challenges they’re facing and how we can work together to support them. — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-04-17T20:25:58.927Z

Being in the community also means standing up and protesting. When a rumour emerged that DOGE were trying to enter the NOAA office in Boulder, Neguse stood with the employees. The rumour turned out not to be true, but Joe Neguse was there along with other protesters.

x Earlier today we heard disturbing reports of DOGE personnel arriving unannounced at NOAA & NIST. So I went onsite to meet with agency officials & get answers. ⬇️ ⬇️ ⬇️ — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-04-21T20:36:48.028Z

And appearing at the Hands Off Protests.

x Representative @neguse.house.gov firing us up! @indivisible.org #handsoff #HandsOffFortCollins — IndivisibleNOCO (@indivisiblenoco.com) 2025-04-05T18:35:28.710Z

Joe Neguse is an up and coming Democrat who, although he doesn’t always get the attention he has earned, is already at the core of the Democratic Leadership and will likely remain so in the foreseeable future. He is smart, quick, a good speaker and an exceptional debater. He is not afraid to call out the hypocrisy of Republicans and to fight for the needs of the poor and oppressed. His performance during the twenty hour Rules Committee hearing proved this.

In 2017, after an extremely disappointing loss, a number of Democrats stepped up and showed that Democrats had a deep bench of leaders willing to take on Republicans and Donald Trump, most obviously Kamala Harris. We are seeing the same now, as we watch leaders like Joe Neguse, Lauren Underwood, Melanie Stansbury, Shontel Brown and Yassamin Ansari emerge.

I write these profiles because it is important for readers of this site to know that the vast majority of Democrats are committed to fighting back against Trump. I don’t have an issue with individual Democrats being criticized, but when day after day we see multiple stories on perceived Democratic failures, and hardly any stories on Democratic successes, a bias in the community forms. And it is not a bias that leads to the enthusiasm and determination needed to fight against Trump.

We often hear that, “only this person is fighting back” when the fact is most Democrats are working hard to push back against Trump’s ongoing descent into fascism. It is important that we promote and advertise those that are. But their stories aren’t being told here, either by paid writers or community commenters. Joe Neguse has fought against Trump in the courts, in the House of Representatives, at protests, in town halls and through social media. Yet his work is rarely spoken of on this site.

Americans need to join with those engaged in the fight against Trump. Their actions need to be highlighted, their work recorded, and their courage supported. It is for this reason that I chose to amplify the vast majority of Democrats, especially those like Joe Neguse, that are unheralded and less well known, who are meeting the moment with strength and resolve every day.

If you want even more information on how Democrats are attacking this illegal and corrupt administration, go seek out Janesaunts diaries “Dems Doing What We Want them to do”, which is published three times a week, and lpeacocks Thursday diaries on the Congressional Black Caucus.

T2 has also just begun a series called the Rainbow Roundup, where focus is placed on LGBTQ lawmakers and journalists. And Billboteach has one focusing on Hispanic elected Democrats.
