Thursday GNR: The Cruelty/Stupidity/Hypocrisy/Insanity is the Point [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Date: 2025-05-22

Republicans have long been mired in chaos and confusion, but now outright civil war has broken out among them. I am not going to attempt to give you all the details.

But I will give you some of what happened yesterday morning from 1 AM onward as the House Rules Committee debated the Big Beautiful Bustup, aka the Big Bad Bogus Billionaires Bill, with Democrats on the Committee calling out the Rs’ lawless cruelty, stupidity, hypocrisy, and insanity at every turn. That process took all day, with floor votes in the House again occurring in the dead of night this morning.

This is not the full catastrophe for them. This is just a few Republicans complaining that they have gone way too far, while others, notably Chip Roy, complain that they haven’t gone anything like way too far enough. It’s going to get much worse for them before this is over.

The final vote was scheduled as a five-minute vote at 6:55 Eastern. The final result was 215-214 at 6:55, passing the bill by the narrowest possible margin. Now we go on to the Senate.

Rabidly Repellent Republicans Rushing to Ruin/Bad News for Them

The latest disaster is the House Rules Committee debate on the Big Bad Bogus Billionaires Bill, which started yesterday at 1 AM, and continued until , mostly with the execrable Rep. Virginia Foxx presiding.

I can’t list all of the issues on which this bill proposes disastrous policies and demonizes regular people, nor the arguments Democrats made against them. All of them get reported on with great frequency. Similarly for the amendments offered by Democrats, which won’t make the news so much because they won’t go anywhere.

Let’s just consider some of the consequences.

Increasing the national debt by 4 terabucks/$4,000,000,000,000

How much $$Real Money$$ TM each and every item in the bill will cost

each and every item in the bill will cost Not content with cutting $880 billion from Medicaid, they now want to cut $500 billion from Medicare, contrary to constant promises not to

The polling disasters for Rs on every issue

How many lives will be lost from cutting Medicaid and destroying research

How many ultra-Red states will go bankrupt without FEMA during hurricane and tornado season

And also yesterday, the maladministration sent a group of convicts to South Sudan, where there is a long-running and brutal civil war, in defiance of a 9-0 Supreme Court decision. These people have served sentences in US prisons, and are under deportation orders, but the courts do not allow them to be sent to unrelated third countries.

However, the bond market is coming to our rescue, as international borrowers pull back and rates on 20-year Treasury bonds rise sharply. This development is much more powerful than fears of inflation and recession.

Science! Lifeforms! Weirdness (Legitimate or Stupid)!

x Well, on Monday I told my class that the furthest known galazy was at redshift z=14.2, and now I get to go in and tell them it's now z=14.4! The best kind of wrong! Teaching astrophysics is really fun. 🤩 🧪🔭🎢

Note that the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation was emitted about 378000 years after the Big Bang at a redshift of z = 1100. That gives us vast scope to look for even earlier galaxies.

x Jupiter Was Formerly Twice Its Current Size and Had a Much Stronger Magnetic Field New research pins down Jupiter's size, spin, and magnetic state during the solar system's formative years, providing vital clues to planetary formation. www.caltech.edu/about/news/j... #Jupiter 🔭🧪

In a new study published in the journal Nature Astronomy, Konstantin Batygin (PhD '12), professor of planetary science at Caltech; and Fred C. Adams, professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Michigan; provide a detailed look into Jupiter's primordial state. Their calculations reveal that roughly 3.8 million years after the solar system's first solids formed—a key moment when the disk of material around the Sun, known as the protoplanetary nebula, was dissipating—Jupiter was significantly larger and had an even more powerful magnetic field. … Batygin and Adams approached this question by studying Jupiter's tiny moons Amalthea and Thebe, which orbit even closer to Jupiter than Io, the smallest and nearest of the planet's four large Galilean moons. Because Amalthea and Thebe have slightly tilted orbits, Batygin and Adams analyzed these small orbital discrepancies to calculate Jupiter's original size: approximately twice its current radius, with a predicted volume that is the equivalent of over 2,000 Earths. The researchers also determined that Jupiter's magnetic field at that time was approximately 50 times stronger than it is today.

The study does not say where Jupiter’s extra mass went. The original paper is paywalled.

Mmmmmm…solar power.
