Scientists make disturbing discovery about new threat affecting oceans: 'It's millions and millions of metric tons of this stuff'

If you've ever heard of microplastics in the ocean, you may have imagined small bits of plastic floating on the surface of the water. Unfortunately, this isn't quite the right picture. A recent global survey found that microplastics — invisible to the eye — penetrate the entire oceanic column, from the surface to the sea floor. While researchers initially expected microplastics to either sink or float, accumulating at the surface or the ocean floor, an April study at Florida Atlantic University revealed that microplastics were distributed almost evenly throughout the ocean, New Scientist reported. By collecting data from over 1,800 oceanic stations over the past decade, the research team found that while microplastic distribution varies with size, the overall pattern is relatively uniform, and those that are the most evenly dispersed tend to be the longest-lasting. As a result, the polymers in ocean microplastics take up much of the ocean's bandwidth for carbon, especially at greater depths.

x The fight for democracy is the fight of our generation. It may not be the battle we wanted, but it is the one we face. The state of our democracy and the future of our country depends on our willingness to take risks, ignore the naysayers, weather setbacks and fight fiercely for democracy. — Marc Elias (@marcelias.bsky.social) 2025-05-22T13:03:22.187Z

World's largest battery manufacturer achieves revolutionary breakthrough with new technology: 'A key development'

The world's largest electric vehicle battery maker has hit a remarkable benchmark. China-based Contemporary Amperex Technologies, or CATL, is mass-producing sodium-ion batteries, bringing to fruition a technology that has the potential to replace common lithium-ion chemistry, according to a news release from the company. "With sodium's inherent safety and abundant reserves, it efficiently reduces dependence on lithium resources and strengthens the foundation of new energy technologies, while promoting energy utilization from 'single resource dependence' to 'energy freedom,'" CATL said in the statement. Experts worldwide are studying sodium-based batteries for those reasons and others. A lower energy density — or the amount of power the pack can store per pound — compared to lithium has been a holdup, CleanTechnica reported.

Ukraine has a new motorcycle attack unit that rushes gun-toting troops into battle on off-road bikes

As the battle with drones continues, motorcycles have become a rising star in Ukraine's war. The Ukrainian military's 425th separate assault regiment, nicknamed "Skala," announced on Tuesday that it had officially formed the country's first motorcycle attack company. "As a result, we now have a modern 'cavalry' whose main task is to rapidly break through to enemy positions, conduct assault operations, and quickly shift the direction of attack," it said on its Telegram channel.

Scientists find '2.6 million golden eggs' near an underwater volcano

Scientists are speaking out about a remarkable discovery: Millions of living eggs near an underwater volcano off the west coast of Canada. "The whole thing is wild," lead researcher Cherisse Du Preez of Fisheries and Oceans Canada told USA TODAY in a May 20 email. "It challenges what we consider possible for life on this planet." The discovery dates back to 2023, but has received rounds of media attention since then. More detailed research findings are due to be published in a Canadian government science report soon, Du Preez said.

Kim Jong-un furious as new warship is crushed in launch failure

A new North Korean warship was left lying on its side in the water after a failed launch saw its hull crushed. Kim Jong-un, who witnessed the failed launch of the 5,000-ton destroyer, declared the incident a “criminal act caused by absolute carelessness” and warned that it “could not be tolerated”. The Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said the accident at the eastern port of Chongjin was caused by a loss of balance while the vessel was being launched.

Multiple people dead after private jet crashes in San Diego neighborhood: More than 100 evacuated from homes

Multiple people died on a small plane that crashed into a San Diego neighborhood early Thursday, officials say, as roughly 100 people have been evacuated from homes near the crash site. A small Cessna 550 carrying an unknown number of passengers crashed into the Murphy Canyon neighborhood around 3:47 a.m., and authorities are investigating whether the aircraft collided with a power line. "All the fatalities look to be the ones from the plane," Assistant Fire Department Chief Dan Eddy said before confirming there were “multiple fatalities.”

The US and South Korea just rewrote the rulebook on salvaging a downed F-35

An F-35A stealth fighter jet that crash-landed on its belly in 2022 has been given a new lease of life thanks to a dramatic operation to remove and then reattach its wings. The South Korean air force aircraft made headlines three years ago after a catastrophic mid-flight bird strike caused an F-35 pilot to make a "belly landing," or gear-up landing, at Seosan Air Base, near the country's eastern coast. The South Korean pilot walked away from the high-risk maneuver unharmed, but the damage left the Lockheed Martin fifth-generation fighter unfit for service.
