Yes to monarchy. Seriously. [1]

Yes, seriously.

The USA has two problems: Trump and MAGA and populism and nationalism is one, but there’s also a deeper problem that got you where you are now. It is that your Constitution does not subordinate the executive to the legislature. The President is a virtual king for 4 years. Solve both problems: make the Trump dynasty the constitutional monarchs: King Donald II being the first crowned head of the United States.

Don’t scream. Hear me out.

Canada and Australia and New Zealand and the United Kingdom and the Netherlands are constitutional monarchies. They demonstrate (1) that it’s a better form of government and (2) that a mad, bad or imbecilic monarch need not cause major problems.

The best form of democracy is cabinet government, in which the representatives of the people — the parliament — approves and dismisses the executive (the Cabinet and Prime Minister). A directly elected and virtually irremovable President with executive power and legal immunity is the worst form of democracy. But it’s hard to move any country from very bad democracy to as-good-as-it-gets democracy. It takes a political collapse, or a particular confluence of forces that make this attractive across the parties, across the regions, and for all social strata.

The USA might be at that lucky moment, where Constitution 2 can be achieved.

Cabinet government under parliament requires either a constitutional monarch, a governor-general appointed outside the system, or a president with strictly limited powers. This head of state, in whichever form, provides the continuity when Parliament is dissolved for elections, or when it is prorogued. The Head of State’s job is to legitimate (and sometimes do) what that parliament would have done, had it been in session.

Constitution 2 would be a constitutional monarchy under Donald Trump Jr. and his heirs and successors in perpetuity.

Democrats and the citizens generally can buy Constitution 2 because they genuinely want a better democracy. A constitutional monarchy is more democratic than the virtually unrestrained rule of a President with all the powers of the government machinery plus legal immunity and the right to pardon wrongdoers (goodbye the rule of law and judiciary) and the power to declare an “emergency” at any whim (suck that, the legislature).

On the other side of the aisle, would leading Republicans dare to oppose it?

The plebs — as distinct from the citizens — would have spectacle. Trump Halls in every town — but answering to Parliament. Fireworks on King’s Birthday. Parades galore! Royal gossip columns. Paparazzi chases. The media will love this.

Some American(s) please, pick this up and run with it. I have other fish to fry.
