Still Think Democrats Aren't Fighting Back? Watch Dems During the 20 hour Rules Committee Hearing [1]

Republicans began the Rules Committee Hearing of their Big, Abysmal, Abomination of a Bill at one in the morning, no doubt hoping to pass the Bill through committee in the dark of night.

But 20 hours later, the Committee is still in session, in large part because Republicans only just finished (at nine tonight) writing it.

Throughout the hearing, while the 9 Republicans took time off to nap, sleep, and dream about how to enrich their friends at the expense of the poor, the four Democratic members, Ranking Member Jim McGovern, Joe Neguse (Colorado), Mary Gay Scanlon (Penns), and Theresa Leger Hernandez (NM) have been fighting against this cruel, heartless Bill.

Joining them have been a number of Democrats who have, over the last 20 hours, introduced and testified on 500 amendments to the Bill.

So that readers are aware of the work that is being done, I've submitted a number of highlights from the testimony of Democrats.

Here is Raul Ruiz giving a bit of an introduction to the Rules Committee.

As the hearings started, Democrats spoke to demonstrators fighting against Medicaid and SNAP cuts

x House Budget Committee Democrats Retweeted Social Security Works: Right now, Republicans are trying to pass a budget vote in the Rules Committee. Reps. @RepBrendanBoyle , @RepMGS , and @RepTeresaLF spoke with protesters outside on the Capitol steps about Republicans’ plan to (cont in reply...) — Congressional Committee Posts (mirror) (@housecommittees.govpeeps.us) 2025-05-22T00:26:26.759517Z

x Tonight, Rep. Katherine Clark got straight to the point on the Capitol steps: Republicans are breaking Medicaid so they can rob it. @whipkclark.bsky.social #HandsOffMedicaid — Social Security Works (@socialsecurityworks.org) 2025-05-21T06:45:40.054Z

Nikema Williams, testifying before the Committee after introducing 16 amendments.

x Children, seniors, veterans...our people deserved a voice in the Rules Committee fighting for them, especially as Republicans are pushing tax breaks for billionaires while gutting #Medicaid and #SNAP. I introduced 16 amendments during my testimony today, to actually help the American people. (1) — Congresswoman Nikema Williams (@repnikema.bsky.social) 2025-05-22T00:31:20.049Z

Janelle Bynum, making sure that members of the Rules Committee Chairpersons' district understand that over 200,000 will lose healthcare, because Chair Fox sure doesn't want them to know.

x Chair Foxx wants to ignore the fact that 201,000 people in her district will lose healthcare because of Republicans’ trash bill. Republicans on the Rules Committee want to bury their heads in the sand – I won’t let them. They can try to run from the facts, but they can’t hide. — Rep. Janelle Bynum (@bynum.house.gov) 2025-05-22T01:01:14.044Z

Shontel Brown added amendments to save SNAP from cuts. She focuses on the impact of these cuts to working class families.

x Tonight, I spoke out in the Rules Committee against the cold, calculated cuts in Trump’s Big Bad Ugly Bill and filed an amendment to undo their SNAP cuts targeting families. This bill ignores the real lives of working class families and makes their lives harder, not easier. — Rep. Shontel Brown (@repshontelbrown.bsky.social) 2025-05-21T23:59:04.489Z

Sam Liccardo testified about how this bill inflates, not reduces, the debt.

x I testified before the House Rules Committee to say what needs to be said: the GOP’s so-called budget is a fiscal disaster. The Big, Bloated Borrowing Bill steals from our children’s future — and they won’t forgive us for it. — Rep. Sam Liccardo (@liccardo.house.gov) 2025-05-21T23:50:54.502Z

Joe Neguse, pointing out Republican hypocrisy when it comes to the deficit.

x My Republican colleagues claim to promote fiscal responsibility—until it's time to give tax breaks to billionaires. And then, suddenly, deficits don't matter. Make it make sense. 🤷🏾‍♂️ — Rep. Joe Neguse (@neguse.house.gov) 2025-05-21T13:41:30.033Z

Emily Randall testifies to the impact this will have on the people in her district.

x Stopped by the House Rules Committee to share stories from our neighbors about what would happen if they lost access to Medicaid. House GOP tried to have this debate in the dead of night — we wouldn’t let them get away with it. The American people are watching. The American people deserve better. — Rep. Emily Randall (@repemilyrandall.bsky.social) 2025-05-21T22:22:01.242Z

Democrats crowding the hearing room, waiting to testify. If you see an empty chair, it belongs to a Republican Committee member.

x It may be dark of night, but Dems are here in force to fight back. — Rep. Melanie Stansbury (NM-01) (@repstansbury.bsky.social) 2025-05-21T10:25:05.354Z

Finally, Ranking Member Jim McGovern and Suzanne DelBenne speaking part way through the hearings today.

x House Republicans wanted to jam their budget bill through the Rules Committee under the cover of night. They don’t want you to know it takes away health care & raises costs for millions of families. Democrats have been here for hours fighting to change it. @repmcgovern.bsky.social — Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (@repdelbene.bsky.social) 2025-05-21T21:22:51.512Z

There are really too many examples of Democrats testifying before the Committee and attacking this bill. If you're wondering what your local House member did, search them up on your favourite social media outlet.

You can get a good cross section by also using "Rules Committee" as a search item in BlueSky and Twitter.

As I write this, Republicans have finally released their latest version of the Bill. Look for it to be even worse than what was before the Committee over the last 20 hours.
