Republican bill could end the rule of law [1]

The most shocking piece of the Republican’s “Big Beautiful Bill” is getting very little attention. Right now, the one thing getting in the way of Trump’s push towards fascism is the judiciary blocking many of his illegal orders. The bill contains a provision to neuter the courts by limiting their ability to enforce their orders.

The House Judiciary Committee’s portion of major spending legislation includes a provision that appears to limit the authority of judges to find U.S. government officials in contempt of court, drawing fire from critics who say it amounts to freeing the Trump administration to ignore court orders The measure, Section 70303, is the final paragraph of 116 pages of text the committee approved last week as part of the process detailed in the fiscal 2025 budget resolution. The language would prohibit courts from using federal funds to enforce a contempt citation for failing to comply with court orders if plaintiffs don’t offer money for bond pursuant to the rules of civil procedure — something experts said does not happen in most cases challenging U.S. government policies.

The provision would make it inordinately expensive for plaintiffs to enforce contempt of court orders. This would allow Trump and his thugs to thumb their noses at court orders without the consequence of being held in contempt. This would effectively do away with the final check and balance on this aspiring dictator.

The press is giving this so little coverage that, although I was alerted to it by an article in my newsfeed earlier today, it took 15 minutes of web searching to find any more information about it. There are a few articles about it on sites with paywalls. There are a few videos about it on Youtube, including one from Thom Hartmann warning about how this would be the end of democracy in the USA.

Here’s a link to a letter of opposition to Mike Johnson from Democratic representative Laura Friedman. The letter is co-signed by several other Democratic House members.

This bill was already a huge turd. This provision turns it into a 6-alarm fire, with the survival of democracy at stake.
