Democrat Sam Sutton Wins NY State Senate Race in Trump-Voting Brooklyn District -Congratulations! May 21, 2025
May 20, 2025– another Tuesday, another special election, and another political loss for Demagogue/Dictator wannabe Donald. This time, it’s in Brooklyn, New York. In this borough, with more than 95% of the votes counted, Democrat Sam Sutton clobbered his GOP rival Nachman Caller by the humongous margin of 35.2%--67.6%-32.4% to win a special election for the NY State Senate.

This special election took place to fill the vacancy left when Democrat Simcha Felder resigned this past April after winning a special election for a seat on the NY City Council. This state senate race was watched carefully because the GOP was hoping to flip this seat to the “Red” camp. Why? Because, even though this state senate district is 49.7% Democratic v. 21.1% Republican in registration, Donald took 77% of its vote in the 2024 presidential election. The Empire State Senate District 22 is located in southern Brooklyn and includes part or all of the Brooklyn neighborhoods of Borough Park, Midwood, Madison, Gravesend, Sheepshead Bay, and Marine Park.

This district is heavily Jewish. However, unlike many other liberal Democratic Jewish areas in the country, it is moderate and conservative politically with a large number of Orthodox Jews, including many conservative Syrian Jews of Sephardic or Near Eastern origin. Many of the Orthodox Jews, unlike the majority of liberal Conservative,Reform, and secular Jews, voted for Trump because they perceived him (erroneously, IMHO) as “stronger” on backing Israel’s security and because many of them, although often voting for local Democrats, view the national Democratic Party as tainted by anti-Israel activists, who are, frankly, just a very small minority. Former State Senator Felder, Sutton, as well as his rival Caller are all Jewish. In addition, state senator-elect Sutton has close ties to the Sephardic community and is a co-leader of the Sephardic Community Federation. Sutton’s main policy priorities will be to promote “community-based approaches” to public safety. He also hopes to increase school funding and advance clean energy initiatives.

Sutton is a businessman who has led a non-profit for years. His overwhelming victory over Caller, an attorney who ran for the NY assembly a decade ago, shows that in this moderate/conservative Democratic area these voters have quickly soured on Trump and have seen through his anti-democratic ways. They now probably understand that Donald and his fanatics are, as the saying goes, “not good for the Jews” or anyone else. These voters have, obviously, not joined the MAGA gang.
