Tuesday 5/20 edition of lots and lots and lots of Democrats in action! [1]
['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']
Date: 2025-05-20
This series is born out of frustration with seeing people on social media and this site say, “Where are the Dems?” or “What are the Dems doing?” This is not meant as an exhaustive list, but merely as a highlight of the types of the activities and statements they’re doing and making.
A big welcome to all of you who are new to this series, which I publish Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Please, before you complain about the party, take a few minutes of time to see if your concerns are being addressed.
I also encourage EVERYONE to check out the following diary series: lpeacock does Thursday diaries on the Congressional Black Caucus. Dfh1 is doing a Monday and Friday series that spotlight individual Democrats. T2 also has a series called the Rainbow Roundup, where focus is placed on LGBTQ lawmakers and journalists. And Billboteach has one focusing on Hispanic elected Democrats and civic education.
You can gain easy access to all these diaries by following the Democratic Party Spotlight Group.
Chair Ken Martin and @Democrats.
x We know exactly why House Republicans will meet in the dead of night on Wednesday to prepare Trump’s budget for the floor—because they’re cowards who want to hide away while they gut health care and food assistance. They think we won’t notice. They better think again. — Ken Martin (@kenmartin.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 8:59 AM
x Republicans are cowards. They ducked their voters all year, refusing to hold town halls. Now they're lining up a late-night weekend vote to kick millions off health care and take food away from kids. These guys are gonna lose their jobs in the midterms for enabling Trump. — Ken Martin (@kenmartin.bsky.social) May 18, 2025 at 9:48 AM
x Republicans are trying to hide from their disastrous budget. That’s why they pushed this bill through in the dead of night.

x FEMA is unprepared for hurricane season following operational changes, low morale, and Trump and DOGE’s mass layoffs. Hurricane season starts June 1. — Democrats (@democrats.org) May 17, 2025 at 4:40 PM
Democrats doing Democratic things…
Up first, the fight over the big ugly bill
x House Republicans are trying to pass their extreme budget in the dead of night. We are fighting hard to stop them.
[image or embed] — Hakeem Jeffries (@hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 9:05 AM
x Republicans crash the economy. Democrats save it. Repeat every 4-8 years. — Hakeem Jeffries (@hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social) May 17, 2025 at 12:19 PM
x I’m introducing a bill to prohibit any foreign aircraft from being used as Air Force One It'll prohibit DoD from using funds to procure or modify foreign aircraft for presidential flights Retrofitting the Qatari plane would cost billions and could never even truly eliminate all catastrophic risks — Chuck Schumer (@schumer.senate.gov) May 19, 2025 at 1:08 PM
x The only logical decision. Of course it’s against the law in America to pick up someone off the street and send them to a foreign prison without due process. Trump can’t be allowed to shred our laws, Constitution, and our legal right to due process. Today it’s immigrants. Tomorrow it could be you.
[image or embed] — Chuck Schumer (@schumer.senate.gov) May 16, 2025 at 3:07 PM
x After more than 26 hours of debate, Republicans REFUSE to recognize their reality: They are kicking MILLIONS of hardworking Americans off their health care—all so their billionaire friends can get tax cuts.
What’s worse? They can’t even agree that’s enough people to kick off.
[image or embed] — Energy and Commerce Democrats (@energycommerce.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 11:40 AM
x The GOP held a late-night committee vote yesterday so they could strong-arm holdouts and advance their budget bill in the dead of night. Hiding from the public is something you'd do if you weren't cutting benefits, right? spectrumlocalnews.com/nc/triad/new...
[image or embed] — Congresswoman Valerie Foushee (@foushee.house.gov) May 19, 2025 at 11:27 AM
x House Republicans are trying to take away health care from nearly 14 million Americans and force community clinics to cut services or close. They also want to take away food assistance from kids, seniors, and veterans.
House Democrats are fighting back. @RepMikeLevin explains more.
[image or embed] — House Democrats (@housedemocrats.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 11:06 AM
x Republicans know their big bad budget’s major cuts to vital programs and new giveaways for billionaires are outrageous and unpopular. That’s why they’re holding votes at 11PM and hearings at 1AM – they hope you’re not paying attention.
[image or embed] — Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester (@bluntrochester.senate.gov) May 19, 2025 at 10:42 AM
x Late at night, House Republicans voted to cut Medicaid for millions. Their next vote is planned for 1AM on Wednesday. They’re gutting healthcare just to pay for tax cuts for billionaires. And they don’t want the American people to see when they’re doing it.
[image or embed] — Congressman Greg Casar (@repcasar.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 10:16 AM
x In the dark of night, Republicans advanced a bill that increases the deficit & takes away healthcare for over 13 million people, all while giving tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest among us. — Congressman Troy A. Carter, Sr. (@reptroycarter.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 10:07 AM
x In the same bill that exempts gun accessories from taxes, Republicans make Medicaid patients pay a sick tax every time they go to the doctor. It's heartless, and it's bad budget policy.
[image or embed] — Rep. Morgan McGarvey (@repmcgarvey.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 9:55 AM
x Trillions in tax breaks for billionaires. Cuts to Medicaid. No paid family leave. A discount for gun silencers. We fought for 18 hours—and just now Republicans failed to pass their Big Dumb Bill in Budget Committee because they want EVEN MORE Medicaid cuts. Make your voice heard.
[image or embed] — Rep. Jimmy Gomez (@gomez.house.gov) May 19, 2025 at 9:25 AM
x DeLAURO: Are you planning to break the law by impounding appropriated funds? RFK Jr: If you appropriate the funds, I'm going to spend them D: We have! You're cutting the NIH by $18b. Congress appropriated those funds. How can you justify cutting billions from the biomedical research budget?
[image or embed] — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) May 14, 2025 at 7:20 AM
x After Donald Trump spent the last year promising to fight for regular people, every single Republican voted against my amendment to close the carried interest loophole. They care more about appeasing billionaires and hedge fund managers than helping regular people.
[image or embed] — Congressman Don Beyer (@beyer.house.gov) May 18, 2025 at 8:22 AM
x What makes the Republicans’ plan to cut health care even worse is that it’s to give tax cuts to the top 1%. In other words: They want to cut people’s health care, so billionaires get richer. Stupid. — Rep. Ted Lieu (@reptedlieu.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 12:50 PM
x Republicans want to pay women to have more children but won’t feed the ones we already have. That is not pro-woman. That is not pro-child. That is not pro-family. It’s just cruel. @repgwenmoore.bsky.social is a fighter, and we will keep fighting with her for a better future.
[image or embed] — Democratic Women’s Caucus (@demwomencaucus.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 12:49 PM
x I’m all about the data, so let me hit you with some numbers: 1 in 3 kids in Oregon are on Medicaid 80,000 people in our state use SNAP to put food on the table 13.7 MILLION Americans rely on Medicaid for health care And 220 Republicans want to steal those benefits. That's BS.
[image or embed] — Rep. Janelle Bynum (@bynum.house.gov) May 19, 2025 at 11:51 AM
x After 16 hrs of fighting for families in @WaysMeansCmte, I offered an amendment to tackle the housing crisis: up to $65K for first-time buyers + more starter homes. 🏠 Republicans said no. But billionaires? They get tax breaks. 💸
[image or embed] — Rep. Jimmy Gomez (@gomez.house.gov) May 19, 2025 at 11:51 AM
x RM @meeks.house.gov and @repgregstanton.bsky.social today introduced a discharge petition to force a vote to terminate President Trump’s authority to impose tariffs on Canada and Mexico. Statement from the Ranking Member⬇️

Everything else
x I was proud to lead 100+ of my colleagues in introducing the Born in the USA Act, which prohibits any government funds from being used to carry out Trump’s unconstitutional and illegal birthright citizenship executive order. Read more: ramirez.house.gov/media/press-...
[image or embed] — Congresswoman Delia C. Ramirez (@ramirez.house.gov) May 18, 2025 at 8:41 AM
x On May 19, 1864, President Lincoln urged Sen. Sumner to hear Mary Booth’s plea for fair aid to Black soldiers’ families. This helped inspire H.R. 406, ensuring equal treatment of Black widows & children of Veterans. 93 days until Slavery Remembrance Day. #CountDowntoSRD
[image or embed] — U.S. Representative Al Green (@algreen.house.gov) May 19, 2025 at 9:36 AM
x I joined @hankjohnson.house.gov in re-introducing legislation to help those who need it most get from point A to point B. This bill:
🚌 Provides $20B annually for public transit
🚌 Brings more frequent service on bus & rail lines
🚌 Prioritizes services to places with existing poor service
[image or embed] — Rep. Lucy McBath (@mcbath.house.gov) May 19, 2025 at 9:36 AM
x In 2019, California's statewide battery capacity was 770 megawatts. Thanks to our efforts since taking office, our energy storage has surged to 15,700 MW — including 2,300 MW added since last September. That means a more clean, resilient energy grid to meet peak demand.
[image or embed] — Governor Gavin Newsom (@governor.ca.gov) May 19, 2025 at 9:47 AM
Press appearances
x I joined The Weeknight on MSNBc to discuss the challenges @housedemocrats.bsky.social are currently facing. The battle is twofold. We must:
1. Ensure the president follows Supreme Court orders.
2: Confront the erosion of judicial authority.
Accountability at all levels is non-negotiable.
[image or embed] — Congressman Glenn Ivey (MD-04) (@ivey.house.gov) May 19, 2025 at 10:06 AM
x What's on the GOP agenda this week?
Their big bad budget bill.
A huge handout to the .1% and a slap in the face to working families.

x After Donald Trump spent the last year promising to fight for regular people, every single Republican voted against my amendment to close the carried interest loophole. They care more about appeasing billionaires and hedge fund managers than helping regular people.
[image or embed] — Congressman Don Beyer (@beyer.house.gov) May 18, 2025 at 8:22 AM
x Van Hollen: "Trump's visit to the Middle East- my view is the narrative here was selling out US national interests for the private gain of his business. He essentially gave away the crown jewels of US AI and semiconductor tech to the gulf in exchange for a $2b investment in his stablecoin venture"
[image or embed] — Aaron Rupar (@atrupar.com) May 18, 2025 at 8:08 AM
x GOV. @andybeshearky.bsky.social : “All children are children of God. I didn’t want a legislature picking on those kids. If they show them hate, I’ll show them love.” 🏳️🌈 As @GovBillLee signs hate bills (despite having a sister who is married to a woman), next door Beshear leads with love.

x Trump wants to accept a 15-year-old used Qatari jet that would require $1 billion in upgrades. Under the Constitution, Congress needs to vote to allow such a “gift.” Urging Republican leadership to bring up a vote.
[image or embed] — Rep. Ted Lieu (@reptedlieu.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 8:22 AM
x There is no room for compromise when it comes to protecting American's health care.
ESPECIALLY when the primary goal is transferring that money to the 1% in the form of tax giveaways.
[image or embed] — Congresswoman Gwen Moore (@repgwenmoore.bsky.social) May 19, 2025 at 12:40 PM
x A couple of weeks ago, I read an op-ed in the New York Times about a possible Trump third term. Here’s my response.
