It’s almost time for one of my favorite getaway traditions, a music jam! I’ve been a part of the virtual world community of Second Life since 2007, and my favorite thing to do there is attend live music shows. Ever since 2011 I’ve gotten together regularly with other SL musicians and fans to make and experience music together in real life. I’ve been to Jams in Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Nashville and in just ten days I’ll be in Toronto for the second Jam (last time was in 2023). I can’t wait to see everyone again, listen to spectacular music, and sing from the audience or at the late night acoustic circles because even after all these years I don’t like to sing on mic.
Because I’m in Jam preparation mode, I’m listening to and thinking about music. I love finding themes for my music diaries here at Top Comments because you folks are the BEST at taking a theme and finding me all sorts of music I often didn’t know about, so I’m hoping you’ll do me proud again with this theme…
Songs about real events or people
Mr. Brillig mentioned at breakfast he’d been talking with someone and they hadn’t known that a particular song was written after a tragic event. And we started thinking about songs written about or influenced by actual people or events. I’m going to share some of the ones I know, and hope you’ll do the same in the comments!! Note: I’m choosing to leave out songs that while referencing times in history don’t reflect a specific event, such as Strange Fruit or A Change is Gonna Come. You’re welcome to include those in your suggestions!!
As we head to the Tops, I would be remiss if I did not include both Billy Joel’s original We Didn’t Start The Fire and Fall Out Boy’s stellar 2023 Update in this list of historical songs. If you know the original but have not listened to the Fall Out Boy version, you’re in for a treat… they do it justice.
