Zen Story: The tigers and a strawberry

There is a young women who is walking across a field. When she sees a tiger approaching her. She is terrified. Turns around and runs away from the tiger. But, as she runs she realizes that what she was running toward was a cliff. But, she keeps running in order to escape the tiger.

And when she gets to the edge of the cliff she sees that there is a vine connected to a very old old plant. That is going down over the cliff. And so she grabs the vine and through herself over the cliff. Holding onto the vine. Breathes a sigh of relief until she looks down beneath her, and sees that which is beneath her a long way down, and there are other tigers.

So, she is suspended by the vine rope and hears a gnawing noise. And what she had not noticed before is that there were two mice gnawing into the vine she is holding onto. And if they keep going they will cut the vine and she will fall.

So, this is from a blues perspective our life. The past is chasing us. The future is below us. And day to day we are getting older. So into the scenario. What is introduced.

As is, this woman is holding to the vine. Hanging over this cliff. She notices, after she notices the mice, that right in front of her growing out of the cliff is one strawberry. So she takes the two hands that had been holding the vine. Nestling herself so that one hand could hold onto the vine. And reaches out and plucked the strawberry. And the text says she ate it. And nothing had ever tasted so good.

Story told by Rev. Christy Ramage from the Northbrae Sunday Service 5/18/2025 Sacred Stories.
