Storm chaser watches tractor trailer drive directly into Kansas tornado

Severe weather blitzed the central United States over the weekend, and AccuWeather Storm Chaser and Meteorologist Tony Laubach witnessed a near-catastrophe in northwestern Kansas on Sunday afternoon as a massive tornado touched down. "As we came up, we didn't see the tornado right away, and then as we got closer, we could see just this monster tornado on the highway," Laubach said. Just after stopping a few hundred yards from the towering twister, he watched two tractor trailers pass him, driving directly into the tornado.

Ukraine says it destroyed Russian radar in drone attack

The Ukrainian military said Monday that the Security Service of Ukraine attacked a Russian facility in the Black Sea with the use of drones. The Security Service of Ukraine, or SBU, posted to Telegram Monday that "with the help of surface and air drones,' it destroyed "enemy radars and warehouses" built on gas production platforms. The post also included a video of the attack that showed the approach of the drones from a drone's point of view before a long-distance view of an explosion on the Russian structure.

Uncle Sam’s biggest creditor faces a fiscal crisis ‘worse than Greece’ as its borrowing costs hit 20-year high

Japan, the single largest foreign financier of the U.S. federal government, faces its own mountain of debt just as its economy is beginning to shrink. Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, elected last year as a fiscal hawk, has been facing calls for fresh stimulus ahead of an election for the upper house of parliament in July. On Monday, he warned MPs that Japan could not afford any tax cuts paid for with more borrowing. “Our country’s fiscal situation is undoubtedly extremely poor,” he said, “worse than Greece’s.” Outstanding debt already exceeds the size of its gross domestic product by nearly 2.5 times. The lower the denominator—in this case the economy—the greater the ratio and the less sustainable a nation’s debt burden becomes, experts say.

Mysterious white streak spotted over US skies during surprise aurora storm. What was it?

The night sky offered lucky skywatchers an unexpected double feature on May 17 — a surprise geomagnetic storm and a mysterious white plume slicing through the auroras. The moderate (G2 class) geomagnetic storm came as quite a surprise, kicking off early Friday (May 16) after Earth caught the glancing blow of a coronal mass ejection (CME). The CME was launched during a colossal filament eruption on May 12 from the sun's northern hemisphere. Initially expected to miss Earth , the "bird-wing" ejecta was wider than predicted, with some of the material striking Earth 4 days after it left the sun . But the real head-turner came when a streak of bright white light lit up the sky over Colorado and other parts of the U.S. At first glance, you could be mistaken for thinking it was a strange version of STEVE — a rare atmospheric phenomenon that can accompany the northern lights . But skywatchers quickly realized it was something entirely different.

Poland seizes aircraft tyres bound for Russia in suspected sanctions breach

Polish officials have seized 5 metric tons of tyres for Boeing passenger planes that were due to transit through Belarus and Russia, in what Poland's tax and customs office on Monday said constituted a breach of European sanctions. Western countries have imposed broad-ranging sanctions against Russia and its ally Belarus since Moscow's February 2022 full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Heavily reliant on foreign-made planes, Russia's aviation industry is struggling to provide enough planes to meet demand for air travel. "Officers... discovered during the inspection of a truck in Koroszczyn that the driver was transporting tyres used in Boeing civil planes instead of the declared car and bus tyres," Poland's National Revenue Administration said in a statement.

Experts celebrate as trail camera captures rare sighting of large predator: 'Had to do a double take'

A trail camera in Pike County, Illinois, captured images of a mountain lion strolling through a field, marking just the 11th confirmed sighting in the state since 2002, reported the Jacksonville Journal-Courier. The impressive footage, recorded by resident Brent Jordan, shows the large carnivore moving confidently through the area. Jordan discovered the surprising visitor while reviewing his trail camera images. "Nothing unusual to have 100, 200 pictures a day to go through, randomly scrolled through to see what's on the camera, and then ... we got something a little different on the camera. Scrolling through and had to do a double take and back and forth, and we found our new friend," he told Quincy television station KHQA, per the Journal-Courier.
