Florida Republicans want young people to stay silent. But the Florida Young Democrats (FYD) are fighting back—not just in Tallahassee, but in every local race shaping our communities. Fresh off our April Advocacy Days, where we pushed for Medicaid expansion, union rights, and fair wages, FYD is doubling down on a grassroots strategy: training and electing young leaders in the most minor but most impactful races, from soil and water boards to city councils.
The stakes couldn’t be higher. While Republicans undermine democracy by raising ballot initiative thresholds and attacking workers’ rights (like HB 541, which lets corporations underpay interns), FYD is building a pipeline of leaders to flip Florida’s future. “Our generation deserves more than empty promises,” says FYD. We have increased membership by 300% in the last year, and worked to activate young organizers and leaders across the state. One of our members just won the election to the Presidency of the Progressive Caucus of Florida, cementing Young Democratic control of the organization.
