A place to call home [1]

Tonight, my son and I will sleep on real beds, for the first time in almost 4 years. It’s not that life has gotten easier or that we are suddenly flushed with money. No, but after 3 years of sending most of my translation money to Haiti to help out as I could (with the help of some of social media’s angels specially on Spoutible) I saved my last translations money to move to a new apartment and buy us beds (well at least down payments for the beds).

We still don’t have a living room set, or other “necessities” but we have beds and my son said “It feels like a real home”. Now Nate’s a good kid and hasn’t minded or complained about sending money back to Haiti most of the families we are helping are his friends, so he’s cool with that. But at 14 a kid should have his own bed.

There’s a lot of talk about the evils of social media in the world, but for me there has been a lot of good on social media. It was strangers on social media who help me flee Haiti. It was strangers on social media who spoiled my kid on his birthday and Christmas. It was strangers who bought me a couple of my favorite series for the same, to fill the void left by my library I had to give away before leaving Haiti. We have found angels.

So tonight we have a place to call home and it’s thanks to strangers on social media. It’s an apartment lol, not a house, but it’s home and it has real beds. I didn’t even realize how much I missed beds until I had one again.
