Photo Diary: Downtown Portland OR [1]

Portland exists because of beaver fur, which was immensely popular in the early 19th century for men’s hats. In 1825 the Hudson Bay Company established a fur-trading post where present-day Portland is, and soon settlers began flooding into the territory on what became known as the Oregon Trail.

At first, the settlement was known informally as “Stumptown” (from all the cleared trees), but in 1845 it was officially named Portland (after Portland, Maine—the hometown of one of the founders). The Indian Exclusion Act of 1830 authorized the President to remove Native Americans and open up areas for white settlement—a tradition of white nationalism which continued through the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Japanese internment camps of WW2.

Portland soon became an important Pacific port city, and it is known today as a quirky local culture with the unofficial slogan “Keep Portland Weird”.
