Grocery Price Comparison [1]

An occasional comparison between prices on both sides of the border. I’m curious how prices reflect tariffs and other trade barriers.

All prices have been converted from Mexican currency per kilo to USD per pound.

Product san antonio Monterrey tomatoes $1.54 $0.58 Tomatillo $1.01 $0.56 squash $1.54 $0.63 strawberry $2.28 $1.44 ground beef 80/20 $4.77 $4.66

So we see that fruit and veg is a lot more expensive on the US side of the border. How much of this is due to the tariffs and how much is due to other factors, is your guess.

Tomatoes: 265%

Tomatillo: 180%

Squash: 244%

Strawberries: 158%

Beef: 102% (same, almost)

Edited to include local BMI (Big Mac Index)

BIG MAC in Monterrey: $2.50

BIG MAC in Laredo TX: $4.68
