MEXICO CITY -- Mexico’s president has said President Donald Trump's proposal to tax all #remittances sent by migrants from the United States is absolutely unacceptable. It is a measure that would “harm more than 40 million people and have serious effects on the Mexican economy and that of other countries.”

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is in talks with U.S. legislators and joining representatives of other countries affected. Meanwhile, the Secretary of Finance is seeking to contact the U.S. Treasury Secretary to warn that this initiative violates U.S. law.

"It's an unacceptable measure," the president emphasized during her daily morning press conference. "We don't agree. It's even unconstitutional in the United States, because it would impose double taxes, since Mexicans living in the United States already pay taxes."

House Republicans have included a 5% excise tax on remittance transfers in the White House's priority bill, something that would affect even migrants with permanent residence permits and holders of nonimmigrant visas, such as H-1B, H-2A, and H-2B visas.

According to World Bank figures, remittances sent to the countries of origin of migrants in the United States reached approximately $656 billion in 2023, equivalent to the gross domestic product of Belgium. So you can see why this Bill: It’s another grift.
