Whatado evraybody, whatado.
While I was in the hospital one of my meals had a coupla 2 packs of Zesta brand saltines.
Way back when, like 35 years ago, Zestas were a Keebler elf brand, and I loved those crackers. They had this powdery (soda-y) essence to them and a softer sounding crunch. Nabisco’s Premium crackers were just crisps with hard crunch. And so it went for some years as mergers, acquisitions, cost-cutting and recipe changes rendered them essentially the same.
When I bought a box to refill my Premium crackers tin, I just bought whichever was cheaper at the time. So, imagine my surprise and delight when I munched a corner of one of those crackers. It was like old home week. The softer crunch, the powdery essence hit me right in the old memory bank. Of course, old memories are not precise, but it was close enough for who it was for.
I had recently purchased 2 boxes of Zestas but I hadn’t opened them yet. I made a beeline for them when I got home to see if the sleeve crackers tasted like the restaurant 2-packs. They did! That sleeve of crackers was not long for this world. Nor was the one the next day. It’s not often that something from your teens, 20s and 30s comes back so deliciously.
It was also no surprise when I put the sleeves in the cracker tin, that the sleeve was now 2 inches shorter than they use to be. Shrinkflation strikes again.
