Why I’m Supporting This Grassroots Project to Protect Our Parks [1]

Sometimes, a cause hits close to the heart—even if it’s not your name on the protest sign or your face in the news.
That’s how I feel about the Protect Our Parks Project—a grassroots, family-powered road trip across America to fight for the future of our public lands. My friends are the ones behind the wheel (literally), and I believe deeply in what they’re doing.
At a time when politicians are quietly greenlighting the destruction of Florida’s most beloved parks—selling them off for luxury hotels and golf resorts under the false flag of “eco-tourism”—this crew is saying: Not on our watch.
It’s bold. It’s unpolished. It’s a mom, her two kids, and a vision rooted in justice. And it just might be one of the most important movements you haven’t heard of yet.
The plan? This summer, they’re hitting the road in a minivan, visiting threatened parks and historic civil rights sites across the country—from the Florida Everglades to Yellowstone to Brown v. Board of Education in Topeka. Along the way, they’ll be raising awareness, sharing stories, and organizing local resistance to the privatization and destruction of public lands.
They’re calling it the Protect Our Parks Project, and it’s not just about trees and trails—it’s about protecting the spaces where working families go to breathe, to heal, to teach their children what freedom feels like. It’s about pushing back against greed and greenwashing. It’s about reminding the people in power that parks are for people, not profit.
This is a shoestring effort. No slick consultants. No corporate sponsors. Just good people (single BIPOC mamas) getting into #GoodTrouble—in the spirit of John Lewis and every movement that ever started with a road trip, a vision, and a whole lot of guts.
This little tribe of activist moms are asking folks to chip in just $5 to keep the wheels turning. Every donation helps cover gas, food, park fees, and the costs of sharing these stories far and wide. And I’ll be honest: I wouldn’t be putting my name on this if I didn’t believe these folks were the real deal. They’ve been fighting for justice long before it was trendy—and they’ll keep fighting long after the headlines move on.
This project is about more than just this summer. It’s about planting seeds. Raising the next generation of rabble-rousers. Building a movement grounded in love, land, and community. I’m proud to support it—and I hope you will too. (I sent them $100 to get them started)
Help them get into some #GoodTrouble. Donate. Share. Follow along. And let’s protect what’s worth keeping.
