Ukraine Invasion Day 1,178: Putin spurned a challenge to meet face-to-face with Zelenskyy [1]

Prodazhnost dominates the negotiations as the war continues.

Russian forces conducted a series of drone strikes against Ukraine on the night of May 14 to 15.

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Russian forces launched 110 Shahed and decoy drones from the directions of Bryansk, Kursk, and Oryol cities; and Millerovo, Rostov Oblast.[72] The Ukrainian Air Force reported that Ukrainian forces downed 62 drones over northern, eastern, western, and central Ukraine and that Ukrainian forces lost sight of 29 decoy drones. Official Ukrainian sources reported that Russian drones struck Sumy, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Kyiv, and Ivano-Frankivsk oblasts.[73]

Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's invitation to engage in bilateral negotiations in Istanbul and continues refusing to offer concessions to end the war in Ukraine. Putin spoke to media organizations on the night of May 10 to 11, following the May 10 joint US-Ukrainian-European proposal for a general ceasefire for at least 30 days beginning on May 12.[1] Putin did not agree to the joint US-Ukrainian-European proposal and instead proposed that Russia and Ukraine "resume" on May 15 the direct negotiations that he claimed Ukraine "interrupted" in 2022 in Istanbul. Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan accepted Putin's proposal to hold bilateral negotiations in Turkey on May 15.[2] Zelensky stated that he would personally wait for Putin in Turkey and arrived in Turkey on May 15.[3] Putin assigned several Russian officials, who are notably not in Putin's innermost circle, to attend the talks in Istanbul, and Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on May 15 that Putin will not travel to Istanbul.[4] Putin's rejection of Zelensky's invitation demonstrates Putin's continued resistance to making any concessions and engaging in legitimate, good-faith negotiations at the highest level.

The Russian delegation in Istanbul does not include officials in Putin's innermost circle and is largely the same delegation that Russia sent to the Russian-Ukrainian negotiations in 2022 in Istanbul.

The 1176th day of the large-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine has begun.

In total, 163 combat clashes took place over the past day.

The enemy launched one missile and 78 air strikes on the positions of Ukrainian units and settlements, using one missile and dropping 138 guided bombs. In addition, it carried out more than five thousand attacks, 93 of them from multiple launch rocket systems, and involved 2,983 kamikaze drones for destruction.

The air strikes affected, in particular, the areas of the settlements of Doroshivka and Yuriyevo in the Sumy region; Poltavka and Rusyn Yar in the Donetsk region; Novodarivka, Temyrivka, Hulyaipole, Vysoke, Malynovka, Kamyanske, Pavlivka of Zaporizhia region.

Over the past day, aviation, missile troops and artillery of the Defense Forces hit 14 areas of concentration of personnel, weapons and military equipment, one air defense system and two artillery systems of the Russian invaders.

- In the Kharkiv direction, the enemy carried out offensive actions four times near the settlements of Vovchansk, Topoli and Petrivka.

- In the Kupyansk direction, two attacks by the invaders took place. The defense forces repelled the enemy's assault actions near Pishchany and Zagryzove.

- In the Lymansk direction, the enemy attacked 29 times, trying to advance in the areas of Novomykhailivka, Hrekivka, Tverdokhlibovye, Novoserhiivka, Kolodyaz, Hryhorivka and towards Ridkodub, Lypove, Zelena Dolyna, Olhivka.

- In the Siversky direction, our defenders repelled three assaults by the occupation forces towards Hryhorivka.

- In the Kramatorsk direction, eight clashes were recorded in the areas of Chasovy Yar and towards Bila Hora.

- In the Toretsk direction, the enemy carried out six attacks in the areas of Toretsk and towards Diliivka.

- In the Pokrovsky direction, our defenders stopped 54 assaults by the aggressor in the areas of the settlements of Lysivka, Malynivka, Yelizavetivka, Zvirovo, Kotlyne, Novoserhiivka, Udachne, Novooleksiivka, Novooleksandrivka, Zaporizhzhia, Andriivka and towards the settlements of Stara Mykolaivka, Muravka, Oleksiivka, Nova Poltavka, Yablunivka, Myrolyubivka, Zorya, Promin.

- In the Novopavlivske direction, our defenders stopped 30 attempts to break through the defensive lines near Konstantinopol, Skudne, Rivnepol, Pryvilny, Vilny Pol, Shevchenko, Bahatyr, Novopol, Odradne and towards Zeleny Pol.

- In the Hulyaipol direction, there were no clashes in the past day.

- In the Orikhivske direction, the enemy conducted three offensive actions in the directions of Novodanylivka, Stepovoye and Malaya Tokmachka. They were unsuccessful.

- In the Prydniprovske direction, the Defense Forces stopped five attempts by the aggressor to advance.

- In the Kursk direction, units of the Defense Forces of Ukraine yesterday repelled twelve attacks by the Russian invaders. In addition, the enemy carried out 18 air strikes using 34 guided bombs, and also carried out 264 artillery attacks on the positions of our troops and settlements, including 11 from multiple launch rocket systems.

- No signs of the formation of enemy offensive groups were detected in the Volyn and Polesie directions.

Our soldiers inflict significant losses on the occupation forces in manpower and equipment and actively undermine the enemy's offensive potential in the rear.

*In total, the losses of the Russian invaders over the past day amounted to 1,240 people. Ukrainian soldiers also neutralized two tanks, 14 armored combat vehicles, 47 artillery systems, one multiple launch rocket system, three air defense systems, 82 unmanned aerial vehicles of the operational-tactical level, and 126 units of automotive equipment.*
