Thursday 5/15 edition of Democrats [1]
['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']
Date: 2025-05-15
This series is born out of frustration with seeing people on social media and this site say, “Where are the Dems?” or “What are the Dems doing?” This is not meant as an exhaustive list, but merely as a highlight of the types of the activities and statements they’re doing and making.
A big welcome to all of you who are new to this series, which I publish Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Please, before you complain about the party, take a few minutes of time to see if your concerns are being addressed.
I also encourage EVERYONE to check out the following diary series: lpeacock does Thursday diaries on the Congressional Black Caucus. Dfh1 is doing a Monday and Friday series that spotlight individual Democrats. T2 has also just begun a series called the Rainbow Roundup, where focus is placed on LGBTQ lawmakers and journalists. And Billboteach has one focusing on Hispanic elected Democrats.
You can gain easy access to all these diaries by following the Democratic Party Spotlight Group.
This week congressional Democrats are totally focused on all the budget hearings. Lots of action around those public hearings, which means you may want to tune in on C-SPAN.

x House committees like @waysmeanscmte.bsky.social are debating the Republican budget scheme today. On today’s Democratic Daily Download, Rep. Richard Neal explains how the GOP is giving a huge tax break to the wealthiest while taking away health care from nearly 14 million Americans.

Chair Ken Martin and @Democrats
Starting off right with terrific election news!
x A lotta people in DC want to win the argument. I want to win elections. Last night’s huge victory in Omaha speaks to the power of ‘organizing everywhere’ — our new mission at the DNC. Here’s how we invested in Nebraska: — Ken Martin (@kenmartin.bsky.social) May 14, 2025 at 12:54 PM
x —Recruited volunteers to phone bank, text, and volunteer for events in the run-up to the election.
—Nebraska Democrats received direct financial support through our Red State Fund to build party infrastructure.
—Invested over $1.7M into the Nebraska Democratic Party during the ’24 election cycle. — Ken Martin (@kenmartin.bsky.social) May 14, 2025 at 12:54 PM
x The longest serving incumbent mayor in the country, a Republican, just got fired by Democrat John Ewing in Omaha, NE. Congratulations Mayor-Elect Ewing, Nebraska Democrats, and the Democratic Mayors Association. Watch out Republicans - we are winning all over the country up and down the ballot.
[image or embed] — Ken Martin (@kenmartin.bsky.social) May 13, 2025 at 7:19 PM
x We just need four Republicans to stand with the people and vote against Trump’s big, ugly, Medicaid-gutting bill. Maybe they’ll see our new billboard driving around Capitol Hill today.
[image or embed] — Ken Martin (@kenmartin.bsky.social) May 13, 2025 at 2:36 PM
x The DNC helped @nebraskadems.bsky.social by: —Recruiting volunteers to phone bank and send texts to get out the vote
—Helping with in-person event recruitment
—Direct financial support through our Red State Fund to build party infrastructure

x John Ewing Jr. is the first Democrat in more than a decade to secure the mayoral seat in Omaha. Watch his victory speech:

Democrats doing Democratic things…
As I mentioned up top, the big ugly bill is this week’s focus for congressional Democrats.
x Republicans are heading into this week hell-bent on cutting funding for programs like SNAP and Medicaid to fund tax cuts for the wealthy and large corporations – but I won’t go down without a fight. — Rep. Angie Craig (@repangiecraig.bsky.social) May 12, 2025 at 7:14 AM
x 268,901 people in #IL01 could lose their health care because of this heartless Republican budget. Tomorrow, I’ll fight to protect my constituents and all Americans who rely on Medicaid from these harmful cuts! — Congressman Jonathan L. Jackson (D-IL 01) (@jonathanjackson.house.gov) May 12, 2025 at 4:48 PM
x All you need to know about the Republican tax plan: The wealthiest 5% would get tax breaks. Everyone else would see crucial health care and nutrition assistance programs slashed. Call your reps. — Hillary Rodham Clinton (@hillaryclinton.bsky.social) May 12, 2025 at 11:06 AM
x The nonpartisan congressional analysis confirmed that 13.7 million will lose their healthcare.
It’s not a lie. It’s a fact.
They don’t have to do this.
https://t.co/ORZVgoMcNr — Congressman Greg Landsman (@RepGregLandsman) May 13, 2025
x Republicans in Congress are voting to throw millions of Americans off their health insurance to pay for massive tax giveaways for billionaires.
We are going to hold them accountable. — Pete Aguilar (@PeteAguilar) May 14, 2025
x We are about to consider Trump’s tax bill in the Ways and Means Committee. It kicks 14 million people off their health care in order to give tax cuts to the wealthy.
Democrats won’t let that happen without a fight! pic.twitter.com/5A9RU9njC2 — Rep. Terri A. Sewell (@RepTerriSewell) May 13, 2025
x Seven hours into the Republican tax scam for billionaires markup and @waysmeanscmte.bsky.social Democrats aren't backing down. We're here fighting for working families. Grateful to Leader Jeffries for stopping by to rally and recharge the team.
[image or embed] — Rep. Linda Sánchez (@replindasanchez.bsky.social) May 13, 2025 at 6:18 PM
x We're in the seventh hour of the Ways and Means markup of Republicans' tax cut for the rich. Democrats led by @repstevenhorsford.bsky.social just offered an amendment to stop Republicans from stripping health coverage away from the American people. Every Republican voted against it.
[image or embed] — Congressman Don Beyer (@beyer.house.gov) May 13, 2025 at 6:20 PM
x 🔴 HAPPENING NOW: Democrats fighting to keep Americans' health care safe from billionaires. pic.twitter.com/bGZO6b4Zov — Ways and Means Democrats (@WaysMeansCmte) May 13, 2025
x We just wrapped 18 hrs of debate on the GOP Tax Bill. Their plan is clear: 1) add tripwires around Americans accessing their health care
2) count on people to FAIL to keep up w/ paperwork
3) funnel the 'savings' (aka lost health care) to the ultra wealthy through tax giveaways
[image or embed] — Congresswoman Gwen Moore (@repgwenmoore.bsky.social) May 14, 2025 at 6:20 AM
x Medicaid is NOT a handout. It’s how 4.8M Texans survive. Republicans want to cut $715B from it while handing out tax cuts to billionaires. That’s not “fixing” the budget, it’s disrespect for the people who need it most — and voting for that is un-American, plain and simple. — Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett (@repjasmine.bsky.social) May 13, 2025 at 11:12 AM
x My amendment is simple: if this bill causes Americans to die from losing health care, it can't take effect. If my Republican colleagues truly believed their cuts wouldn’t hurt people, they should’ve had no problem voting to protect people. Spoiler alert: None of them voted for it.
[image or embed] — Rep. Rob Menendez (@menendez.house.gov) May 14, 2025 at 6:10 AM
x 🧵1/8 Reconciliation markup begins today on Ag Committee.
Here’s what you need to know about Republicans’ proposed $290 billion cut to food assistance and what that means for our economy, families, and farmers. ⬇️ — Rep. Shontel Brown (@RepShontelBrown) May 13, 2025
x If the Republicans’ budget passes, at least $715 billion will be cut from Medicaid and health care, and at least 13.7 million Americans will be kicked off their health insurance. @HouseDemocrats will fight like hell against these cuts because the American people — people like… pic.twitter.com/vhIoTtagri — Nanette D. Barragán (@RepBarragan) May 13, 2025
x 🚨 Medicaid cuts don’t just hit the poor — they hit everyone. @RepTedLieu
In our conversation, Rep. Ted Lieu explains how slashing Medicaid would devastate the American economy and leave vulnerable seniors in nursing homes without the care they need. 🏥📉

x After months of Republican lies, we now have confirmation in their newly released budget: House Republicans want to make America sicker and poorer — to make their ultra-rich billionaire donors even richer.
We won’t let them! #NoMedicaidCuts pic.twitter.com/SIqx2FI8Sd — Nancy Pelosi (@TeamPelosi) May 13, 2025
x Seniors should not be kicked out of nursing homes to pay for tax cuts for billionaires.
https://t.co/I8ImKp662E — Congressman Greg Casar (@RepCasar) May 13, 2025
x Cuts to Medicaid will strip coverage from millions of Americans and continue the assault on our already overburdened rural hospitals.
I will keep fighting this with everything I have got. — Mark Warner (@MarkWarner) May 13, 2025
x WATCH: @SenPeterWelch didn’t hold back when discussing Republicans’ ridiculous tax bill.
“It’s an absolute disgrace that this Congress is even having a discussion about taking away health care from children, from seniors, from disabled people.” pic.twitter.com/NNHt869NSk — Senate Democrats (@SenateDems) May 13, 2025
x This is leadership.
This is solidarity.
This is good trouble.

x Nowhere is the lawlessness of the Trump admin more clear than in how they’ve completely ignored the Hatch Act, which Congress enacted to prevent staffers from abusing their offices to promote political agendas.

x When you're only surrounded and motivated by wealthy billionaires, you become so out of touch and think nobody would ever come protest against Republican cuts to their healthcare.
Give me a break. You're a doctor.
https://t.co/jYqtIPD4qU — Rep. Veronica Escobar (@RepEscobar) May 14, 2025
x At a recent @ushousefsc.bsky.social hearing, I pressed U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to oppose U.S. tax breaks for those who invest in #China. Instead, he defended them. See my full statement ⬇️

x Republicans just released the next phase of their plan:
Hiking taxes on electricity and raising energy costs on American families.
Not a single Senate Democrat will support their ridiculous bill. — Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) May 13, 2025

x I’m heading to the floor of the U.S. Senate right now to announce that I’m placing a hold on all political DOJ appointments until we get answers on Trump's corrupt Qatari plane deal. Tune in. pic.twitter.com/5OTDxanRrV — Chuck Schumer (@SenSchumer) May 13, 2025
x Trump lectures Americans about putting up with higher prices, prices he himself triggered And then he’s accepting a $400 million private jet from the Qatari Royal Family His shameless self-enrichment is without equal in American history This is a bribe and a national security betrayal — Chuck Schumer (@schumer.senate.gov) May 12, 2025 at 4:51 PM
x Americans often wonder what the Founders were thinking when writing our Constitution.
We don’t have to guess here. Our Founders did not want kings to bribe our government officials, especially the President.
https://t.co/bsfySYVzNd — Joaquin Castro (@JoaquinCastrotx) May 13, 2025
x Looks like the $400 million luxury plane is just the tip of the iceberg.
https://t.co/U7mQxpLkEE — Congressman Brad Sherman (@BradSherman) May 13, 2025
x Profoundly corrupt: people wishing to cultivate influence with Trump can do so by buying cryptocurrency that he owns or controls, making him richer!!
It’s just plain wrong. That’s why I wrote the End Crypto Corruption Act!
https://t.co/58WU96dElr — Senator Jeff Merkley (@SenJeffMerkley) May 13, 2025
x The Trump administration is trying to eliminate AmeriCorps. These public servants serve schools, shelters, and food banks and deserve better. I'm leading the entire MA delegation to fight for AmeriCorps and America's future.

x House Republicans are pulling the rug out from under families by cutting SNAP benefits for 42 million Americans — all to fund tax cuts for billionaires. That’s shameful.
We should be lowering costs, not making life harder for American families. — Amy Klobuchar (@amyklobuchar) May 13, 2025
x The U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the U.S. Department of Transportation are illegally forcing states to comply with the administration’s immigration policies or give up billions of dollars in funding for disaster relief and transportation.
I’m suing to stop this unlawful overreach. — New York Attorney General Letitia James (@newyorkstateag.bsky.social) May 13, 2025 at 12:26 PM

x Since I became DNC Chair 100 days ago, we’ve hosted over 100 People’s Town Halls in nearly every state in the country. Republicans are running scared from their constituents, hiding after enabling Donald Trump’s economic destruction. But Democrats aren’t afraid to show up. — Ken Martin (@kenmartin.bsky.social) May 12, 2025 at 10:56 AM
x Sisters, you brought the energy this weekend! Thank you for showing up and showing out at my town hall with Senator Merkley – this is what democracy looks like. I’m proud to fight for you and represent this district.
