New Day Cafe: Thoughts from my trip to Reno [1]

Late last week, I flew to Reno to attend a celebration of life for my sister. Here are a few odds and ends that aren’t necessarily related to one another.
One of my relatives had credits for a room at the Atlantis, and that’s where I stayed. Some folks love casinos, but they’re alien places to me, places where smoking is still encouraged and people pay to sit at flashing machines, hoping to get some of their money back. Still, I wandered around and explored the place. I took a pic of one of the restaurants to use as the lead photo for the diary.
My room was on the ninth floor, with a decent view of Mt. Rose and Slide Mountain. I spent little time there, as I was usually visiting with family and inlaws.

I seldom take pictures of urban objects, but I took a few shots of the massive columns outside the Atlantis. The columns support an elevated walkway above one of the streets.
Inside the walkway are more slot machines. Players can look down and watch cars disappear beneath their feet.
Prior to this trip, I had only flown once in this decade (my 2022 trip to Scandinavia). The airport traffic, the long lines at security, the potential for delays, none of that appeals to me. It happens that Delta has a nonstop between Atlanta and Reno. The flight times are not convenient — especially the return flight which is an overnight trip — but at least there are no connecting flights to contend with. Other than both flights being about 30 minutes late, my trip went well. Some of my inlaws were not so lucky. They missed a connecting flight in Denver, and then had their return flight cancelled due to high winds.
The wind was strong when my departing flight took off, but at least we got airborne. I tried to sleep, but could only manage brief naps. When the plane landed in Atlanta at 7am, it was raining and I had 80 miles to drive on busy highways.
After what seemed like forever, I was finally home. I gave Narvik some attention, and took a long nap.
I can’t let this opportunity pass without saying a few words about my sister Mary. She was my younger sibling, born four and a half years after me. We always got along great. We had the same love of the outdoors, and similar tastes in music, politics, and religion. Even though we spent much of our lives in locations that were far apart, we made an effort to see each other as often as we could. We crossed paths three times last year.
One of Mary’s hobbies was peak-bagging, climbing the highest peaks each state. She intended to reach the summit of all the peaks except those requiring technical climbing skills. When she was on Brasstown Bald in Georgia, the clouds put on an amazing show for us.

One of the good things about having a delayed “celebration of life” rather than an immediate funeral is that enough time has passed that friends and family can focus on the good things and the happy times, rather than being immersed in grief. The empty place will always be there, but we were able to enjoy one another’s company for several days before going about our separate ways.
Okay, the floor is yours. All topics are welcome, as usual.
