Russian stuff blowing up: Ceasefire deadline comes and goes [1]

['This Content Is Not Subject To Review Daily Kos Staff Prior To Publication.']

Russia gives its answer about a ceasefire.

x ⚡️Air raid alarms sound throughout Ukraine as May 12 deadline passes with no ceasefire. Russia attacked Ukraine with drones and guided bombs during the night, targeting regions after the May 12 deadline for an unconditional ceasefire expired.

Remember that deadline of Monday night? Now it’s a week.

Maybe there is a good reason for a new deadline. Who knows.

But this just looks weak and pathetic. Not a good start for Merz’s chancellorship.

x 🇩🇪 Merz: If there is no progress this week on Ukraine ceasefire, we will move to increase sanctions on Russia. New sanctions on Russia will cover energy and financial markets.

Trump is sending Rubio, Witkoff and Kellogg to Istanbul. Putin is staying home.

x Russian media reports that Putin will not fly to Istanbul tomorrow and has no current plans to do so. Meanwhile, Russian sources claim a plane is being prepared for Lavrov and Putin's aide Ushakov. Putin’s visit remains unconfirmed, but a decision to proceed could be made at any moment. — WarTranslated (Dmitri) (@wartranslated.bsky.social) May 13, 2025 at 4:33 AM

Zelenskyy is still going to Turkey but won’t meet with Putin’s lap dogs.

x Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has made clear that he is meeting in Istanbul with no other Russian official except for Putin.

x A downed Russian “Gerbera” drone with the message “There will be no truce” — clear proof that Russian forces do not seek peace.

Putin is in too deep to stop the war now. Politically he cannot accept a deal that would be perceived at home as a humiliating outcome for the country they all believe is invincible and destined for greatness.

If anything is going to topple Putin any time soon, that’s it.

x Why is Putin stalling for time, lying, and clinging to the war? The ceasefire will not play to the advantage of the Kremlin elites and Putin himself. Putin's power relies on war.

Merz’s big test of credibility as chancellor.

x Thanks to Scholz, Taurus has become a symbol of Germany’s vulnerability to nuclear coercion. If Merz fails to deliver the weapon system after the ultimatum expires, he too forfeits his credibility. I'd be cautiously optimistic that his advisors and he himself are aware of that. 1/2 — Fabian Hoffmann (@frhoffmann.bsky.social) May 12, 2025 at 12:08 PM

That said, it’s important to remember that Scholz’s delaying tactics mean the Taurus still needs to be integrated and Ukrainian personnel trained. Three months is an optimistic estimate; four to six is more realistic. So, in any case, Taurus will not be operational in Ukraine anytime soon. Also, there is a chance that Taurus won't be delivered because a US veto. ITAR restricitons apply to Taurus deliveries, unfortunately, due to the integrated US-origin turbofan engine and GPS seeker.

And when the tankers violate the ban, as they surely will try to do, they should be seized.

x The European Union is preparing a new blow to Russia's shadow fleet. Specifically, the EU plans to ban 25 Russian oil tankers from sailing in the Baltic and North Seas. euobserver.com/eu-and-the-w...

When I first read this post I saw the words “getting hammered” and thought it was another video about vodka consumption. But after watching it, I bet they wished they were hammered with 100 proof, assuming they made it out alive.

Speaking of getting hammered.

Another Buk air-defense launcher bites the dust.

He seems like a good man trying to do good work. But he lives in Russia so that means he goes to jail.

x I translated today’s closing statement by Russian election monitor Grigory Melkonyants, who delivered a surprisingly motivational speech despite facing many years in prison. Pretty incredible to philosophize about “joy” at a time like this. This man is tough. meduza.io/en/feature/2...

This is an excerpt from his statement to the court:

Your Honor, esteemed participants in these proceedings, dear friends! I am in good spirits today. As the verdict approaches, our trial draws to a close. It’s been an incredible experience. I listened to the beautiful, sometimes emotional words of those who testified as witnesses, read heartfelt letters, and received wonderful postcards. At times, it felt like a real celebration, as if I were a guest of honor, not the defendant. Twenty-one months ago, on August 17, 2023, a new and exciting chapter of my life began. Since then, I’ve lived through a police raid, an arrest, time in a temporary holding facility, three pretrial detention centers, 12 different cells, more than 100 cellmates, and 26 court hearings. I deeply value this experience, knowing how much it’s cost me. More than anything, it helped me reconnect with my own path and learn much about a world I’d long overlooked. I’ve seen how prison destroys people’s lives by robbing them of joy, which is the very heart of happiness itself. You might be surprised by this word — “joy.” You might wonder what joy there could possibly be in my situation, locked away in the dark and cut off from family, friends, and colleagues for months. It’s the joy of knowing that, through this ordeal, I’ve become stronger and never lost faith in the cause to which I’ve dedicated my life. While incarcerated, I’ve met many people I probably never would’ve encountered otherwise — people from all walks of life, with all kinds of educational backgrounds and criminal records. And every day, we have to figure out how to live together: how to organize chores in the cell, whether to open the window, where we might get a fridge or tea kettle. Basically, we hold little referendums all the time and find common ground.

The burials will continue until morale improves.

x Punishment for “500th” among Russian troops remains brutal. In the 15th MRB, deserters are buried up to their necks in a “tight pit.” In the 9th MRB, they’re locked in metal barrels without food or water for days, often leading to death. If they die, they’re declared missing in action.

Russian soldiers from 9th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade are treated like animals.

x The Russian fascists must be defeated.

This is what they do to their own soldiers.

Such torture with no food or water for days in a cold iron barrel is exacted even for refusal to give up their salaries to commanders.

20-30% of the soldiers die in the barrel. 9th brigade.

Russian disinformation will continue to pollute the world until either the regime is deposed or until the West gets serious about stopping it. Don’t bet on the latter.

So, all those hours spent playing GTA can pay off with actual jobs?

x 🎮 Former gamers from the 🇺🇸US, 🇬🇧UK, 🇨🇦Canada and 🇫🇷France are now top FPV operators hitting targets in Russia, - NYP 🇺🇦 Ukraine’s military calls them the best pilots and future of drone warfare.

It was a lot cheaper for Russia to bag ‘em and tag ‘em as unknown.

x The Russian military has drafted legislation that would mandate DNA collection from soldiers to help identify their remains when they're blown to unrecognizable bits on the battlefield. Line up, boys! www.vedomosti.ru/politics/art...

Romania’s right-wing, pro-Russian presidential candidate has his eyes on Moldova.

x There's something truly disturbing about so many Romanians voting for a guy who talks about #Moldova the same way #Putin talks about #Ukraine.

#Romania

Yakutia is way over in Russia’s far eastern region and one of the coldest places you could pick to live.

x At the airport in Lensk,Yakutia, people walk the planks to get to an airplane The Russians complain that Yakutia has low salaries,no infrastructure, absolute communal hell. All this despite the fact that Yakutia is considered the richest region of Russia:more than 25% of the world's diamond from here

The EU shouldn’t give him another euro.
