Time is crunched, things are nuts, please send pie.
There was a time I thought retirement was restful. Oh, not so. Or I’m doing it wrong.
Meanwhile, we’ve met Archbishop Beartongue and gotten deep into the longing, indecision, and pure bad timing that is romance in Swordheart, and I’m beginning to doubt my “let’s compile the worldbuilding facts about this Kingfisher universe” ambition. Why? I don’t know, but at this point it feels more ad hoc and inexplicable than it does detailed and nailed down.
In full disclosure I’m trying hard to appreciate Romance, but the genre itself feels formulaic and scripted: the protagonists change but the women are resourceful and the men prickly, the plots are built on deferred desire, miscues, bad timing, and more than a little overcoming of one’s own prejudices; of course, if my direct literary ancestor had been Jane Austen, I’d probably hold her plot conventions close to my heart, too. Anyway, less romance and more Halla practicing her art of misdirection, please.
I could watch her work that thing all day.
