'Very bad idea': Republicans revolt over Trump scheme to get $400 million plane from Qatar

✂️“Hamas’ sugar daddies are giving Trump a fancy plane? I guess the admin’s anti-semitism initiative has some carve outs,” [Tim] Miller [The Bulwark] wrote Sunday.✂️

Even The MAGA Faithful Are Calling Out Trump For Reportedly Accepting A Jumbo Jet From Qatar

After reports came out that President Trump is accepting a $400 million luxury jet from the Qatari royal family, even MAGA diehards like Laura Loomer spoke out to criticize the move. After news outlets revealed that President Donald Trump is accepting a $400 million luxury jet from the Qatar royal family, one of his prominent supporters—far-right conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer—spoke out to criticize the move. In a Truth Social post Sunday night, Trump claimed the Pentagon would be accepting a Boeing 747-8 “GIFT, FREE OF CHARGE” to serve as a temporary replacement for Air Force One. Trump’s comments come just ahead of his planned visit to Doha, Qatar—part of his first major overseas trip since taking office in January.✂️

There’s not enough outrage being shown in the MAGAsphere, but it’s a start.

Episcopal Church refuses to resettle white Afrikaners, citing moral opposition

In a striking move that ends a nearly four-decades-old relationship between the federal government and the Episcopal Church, the denomination announced on Monday that it is terminating its partnership with the government to resettle refugees, citing moral opposition to resettling white Afrikaners from South Africa who have been classified as refugees by President Trump's administration. In a letter sent to members of the church, the Most Rev. Sean W. Rowe — the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church — said that two weeks ago, the government "informed Episcopal Migration Ministries that under the terms of our federal grant, we are expected to resettle white Afrikaners from South Africa whom the U.S. government has classified as refugees."✂️

Mark Carney Offers Master Class In Snake-Charming

✂️Carney instead offered NATO allies and other world leaders a playbook for how to deal with Arty McDeal when the cameras are rolling. While a certain amount of soul-crushing flattery is the price of admission, it helps to spice it up with some backhanded compliments or open mockery that will sail over his head but not to anyone paying attention.✂️

Old, but related. Toronto Star

Is Mark Carney’s French good enough for a would-be Prime Minister?

✂️It wasn’t a debate. It was an audition for the French-speaking role of a Prime Minister who will soon have to face two fluent French speakers in a real debate: Bloc Québécois leader Yves-François Blanchet and Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre. That’s how the performances of the four aspiring Liberal Party leaders were measured by those who watched the friendly exchange. And on that count, only Montreal-born Frank Baylis, who was educated in French in Toronto, earned a passing grade. Not that Karina Gould, Chrystia Freeland, and Mark Carney couldn’t deliver their messages in French. They each did so with varying degrees of ease. They certainly deserve an “E” for effort — more than the leaders of Ontario’s four provincial parties, who didn’t even bother showing up for last week’s French debate.✂️

I’ve respected Mark Carney since the Daily Show interview some time ago. I was curious how good his French was. I mean, better than mine is, for sure, but you need to have some French skills to win in Quebec.

The new pope is latest sign that the world rejects Trumpism

✂️In short, the new pope, like the old pope, does not support MAGA’s christofascist nationalism. MAGA, confronted with the fact that they do not control everything or everyone, responded in their usual fashion — by wailing and gnashing their teeth. Trump’s former chief strategist, gutter propagandist Steve Bannon, said “it is shocking to me that a guy could be selected to be the pope that had the twitter feed and the statements he's had against American senior politicians.” Conspiracy theorist and Trump intimate Laura Loomer shouted on social media that Leo was a “WOKE MARXIST POPE.” Rabid Trump supporter and former crypto CEO Ryan Selkis accused Leo of “suicidal empathy” and of being an “American who mostly posts en español.” Popes are, of course, not generally disqualified for criticizing American political figures. Nor are they disqualified for demonstrating empathy or speaking Spanish. Still, the Vatican had to know that selecting an American, reform-minded, pro-immigrant pope would be perceived by Trump and his followers as a rebuke.✂️

This was pointed to me by Andrew F Cockburn in this morning’s GNR

From the comments…

phoenixmode6909 I googled this. It was the 2024 commencement at Virginia Commonwealth University. The walkout was a direct response to Youngkin's stance on DEI, his support for ending pro-Palestinian encampments, and his administration's policies regarding K-12 education and critical race theory.Regardless of the year, I still applaud their actions. I'd be willing to be quite a few of them are now also protesting the regime in 2025.

The Democrats Have an Age-Old Problem

✂️It may be that age really is only a number. But having the ability to nimbly adapt to a new way of doing political business, in a media-information environment unlike the one with which we began this century, is what should determine if someone has a place in the Democratic Party’s ranks. In that sense, Clyburn is asking the right question: “What am I supposed to do now?” I’m happy to assist. The most important thing any Democratic elected official can do today is wake up each morning planning to relentlessly criticize and discredit the president and his party, who give Democrats a lot to work with. This is a task that needs far greater participation among Democrats than I’m currently seeing, especially on the economic front. As I said last week, we are headed into the Summer of Scarcity, which means barren shelves, shuttered businesses, lost jobs, and a deep recession. For Democrats too afraid to talk about anything but “kitchen table issues,” this is your moment. Get after it!✂️

Today is…

International Nurses Day (a bit more than a minute and a half)

The noun, not the verb??? It’s never enough for you people, is it?

It’s also Florence Nightingale’s birthday. That can’t be a coincidence. I’m just going to blanket steal (with the good reverend’s blessing) from WineRev in this morning’s GNR

1820 Florence, Italy Birth of Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing, reformer. Born at the (well-off) family villa in Florence, Italy and named for the city but raised at Embley Park, UK. Despite her high social standing and the strong opposition of her family, by 1844 she was determined work in a profession…..and to enter nursing. (At the time, nursing had reached its historic bottom; it was a mean profession, often the sideline occupation of prostitutes when business was slow…… a good deal of why her family was so opposed.) Definitely worth remembrance…..and a life-long heroine to my sweetie SageHagRN, who, because of Florence’s example and life, became a nurse;

20 years in ER and then nearly another 20 teaching

nursing in a University. Nightingale used her family’s wealth to educate herself in the field, taking a curriculum of study in Kaiserwerth, Germany in 1850 from Lutheran Pastor & medical Dr. Fliedner, a pioneer in the field. In 1854 England went to war in the Crimea against Russia, and behind the lines news reports about the lack of care for British wounded shocked Britain. Nightingale took a group of 38 female (!) nursing volunteers and 15 Catholic nuns to the Black Sea hospitals to care for the wounded. Her first letters home (and to the newspapers) told of the wounded dying of disease at 10 times the rate from battle wounds. Her insistence on hand washing by everyone and a fast-formed commission that came to install sewers brought the death rate down to earth. The war made her a national heroine (“The Lady of the Lamp”, as Tennyson’s ode called her). Her 1859 book Notes on Nursing laid the cornerstone for the profession, followed the next year by the opening of her Nightingale School for Nursing (TODAY part of the University of London). The 3-year program not only conferred a degree, but licensed graduates as pharmacists. She fought off the prejudices of the day (at London’s South Hospital, a survey showed only 2 of the 100 doctors on staff (all men) were in favor of educated nurses) and insisted on cleanliness as a method of fighting disease (Pasteur and germ theory of disease was still 20 years in the future.) Her example propelled Dorothea Dix, Clara Barton , Mary Bickerdyke and Sally Yates and many others into nursing in the Civil War and for decades after (like my sweetie and your Gnusie friend SageHagRN.) Nightingale’s contribution to nursing ranks with Luther to theology or Einstein to physics.

The Day of Vesak

The Day of Vesak occurs annually on the day of the full moon in May. This year, it takes place on May 12. It is celebrated as the day that Buddha was born, the day he was enlightened, and the day that he passed away. The exact date of the Day of Vesak is based on Asian lunisolar calendars and is primarily celebrated in Vaisakha, a month of both the Buddhist and Hindu calendars. Buddhism is one of the oldest religions in the world, and millions of people around the world follow the teachings of Buddha.

A bit over 30 seconds.

Yes, I’m sure that’s been posted before.
