A Somber Mother's Day [1]

I had a very sobering Mother’s Day weekend, one that pushed some very deep buttons and made immediately personnal the sadistic behavior of our current federal regime. On Saturday, I was asked to stand witness to and sign paperwork for, undocumented mothers making guardianship arrangements for their US born children in the event that they themselves are deported.

To be clear, these folks were not totally without documents. They all had driver’s licenses, some had social security cards, home ownership and business ownership papers, paid taxes and contributed to local organizations. Their well behaved, sad, and quiet children were with them for the long day.

I worked with a small group of public interest lawyers, law students, translators, and notary publics. There were no outbursts or tears as I had expected there would be. It was grim, determined, and necessary. It was in fact an abomination. I have been unable to sleep for the past 2 nights, thinking about the look in one 5 year old’s eyes.

I am crying as I write this. What are we doing?
