When they were both alive, my parents came over from the States to Ireland around 15 times over the course of 30 years to visit myself and my Irish wife, Deirdre. The four of us used to get in my car, and over the two-week period they used to stay for, we'd spend the best part of that time driving around the scenic parts of Ireland. Near dusk, we'd find a nice B & B in the area we happened to be in, as long as there was a decent pub or two and restaurant nearby. Next morning, we'd get up and have breakfast in the B & B, then venture out again.

In our local pub yesterday evening, someone mentioned the film, The Quiet Man. I'm quiet sure that one of those aforementioned road trips brought us through Cong in county Mayo and its beautiful surrounds, where The Quiet Man was filmed. So today I pulled my DVD of The Quiet Man off the shelf, and this is the summary on the back cover:

Winner of two Academy Awards® (1952) for Best Director and Best Cinematography Galway in the 1920s. After a long and profitable career as a boxer, Irish-born

American Sean Thornton (John Wayne) returns to his home village to settle down and

forget an accident in which he killed an opponent in the ring. Sean buys back

the Thornton cottage, incurring the wrath of neighboring squire

Red Will Dansher (Victor McLaglen) whose sister Mary Kate (Maureen O'Hara) he's fallen in love with. With the drunk Michaeleen Flynn (Barry Fitzgerald)

as a marriage broker, and with Red Will reluctant to allow the courtship to go ahead, Sean Thornton has to battle against all manner of Irish blarney to get the

hand of the girl he loves. One of the most popular romances ever made, and featuring one of the classic fights

in cinema history.

I also found the following web page detailing the locations The Quiet Man was filmed in. While at first the small pictures don't quite seem do the spectacular locations justice, you can right-click on them (bar the very first one) to open up larger versions of the images in a new tab:

And now, on to tonight's puzzle. Below are links to an on-line board to help you work the puzzle, and the solution. But don't peek at the answer until you've made an honest attempt to solve the puzzle, or you'll spoil the fun!
