Putin held a midnight press conference. He didn’t directly reject the 30-day ceasefire proposal, but did so by countering with a proposal for direct peace talks with Ukraine.

Politically he couldn’t just flatly reject the ceasefire without throwing a bone to Trump, so he called for direct negotiations on terms he knows won’t be acceptable. This way, he can continue the war while sounding like he’s open to peace.

x As Western pressure mounts on the Kremlin to accept a 30-day ceasefire, Vladimir Putin has invited Ukraine to return to direct negotiations with Russia, which broke off weeks into the full-scale invasion. meduza.io/en/news/2025...

Zugzwang is a good way to describe it.

Zugzwang (from German 'compulsion to move'; pronounced [ˈtsuːktsvaŋ]) is a situation found in chess and other turn-based games wherein one player is put at a disadvantage because of their obligation to make a move; a player is said to be "in zugzwang" when any legal move will worsen their position.

x I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Putin is stuck in a Zugzwang, therefore he will try to avoid making an actual move for as long as possible. This sounds like him again, trying to avoid making an actual move. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zugzwang

Putin let Peskov be the bad cop.

As Russia approaches one million soldiers dead/wounded, it reached another milestone — 1,000 dead senior officers. And this doesn’t include the 10 generals confirmed dead.

x At the same time we reached 1000 liquidated Russian Senior Officers killed (Majors, Lieutenant Colonels, Colonels and Generals).

The new updated total of all confirmed dead officers nears 6,000.

x At least 5 969 Russian officers have been eliminated in the Russian invasion of Ukraine since 24 February 2022.

Weekly update: +48 newly registered.

Sources: public Russian obituaries and graves.

Russia continues to tally more than a thousand soldiers a day as dead/wounded.

Russian soldiers try to maneuver through the ruins of the city of Vovchansk.

And the unluckiest man in the Russian army.

Russia’s inexpensive solution for the problem of how to replace air defense systems that are sent to Ukraine.

x Japanese analysts discovered that Russia has replaced many S-400/S-300 air defense systems in the far east with decoys.

There used to be 24 S-400 and 12 S-300 launchers in the region - many of which have been relocated for the invasion of Ukraine 6,500km away.

Ah yes. I recall learning in school about how units from Burkina Faso (it was called Upper Volta back then) helped lift the siege of Stalingrad.

x 😵‍💫 Yesterday, Putin read from a script to the leader of the Burkinabe junta about the great contribution Burkina Faso made to defeating Hitler. 😐 And they nodded along with a straight face, completely serious.

They love Russia so much they left to live in Germany.

x An incredibly atmospheric report from a park in Berlin, where «Russian patriots celebrated Victory Day». Yes, they live in Germany because they are Russian and love Russia with all their hearts, and they plan to come to Berlin in tanks.

While Russian assaults continue daily, there has been a noticeable decline in large-scale operations by both sides.

x As our team and I anticipated last year, the momentum of this war is gradually fading. Neither side has enough resources at disposal to achieve a decisive strategic breakthrough. As a result, with or without a formal truce, the intensity of the war is likely to decline — Tatarigami (@tatarigami.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 7:57 PM

The benefits of having served in Russia’s military.

The Kremlin was brought down by this sneak attack from overhead wires.

x In Russia’s Chita, during a Victory Day celebration, locals watched a mock-up of a Soviet plane dangling from a crane, per Nexta. It seems they were trying to mimic an airshow—or maybe shoot something down? It’s unclear.
