Check out bilboteach’s Sunday civics lesson “Impeachment: A Fake Check and Balance.” It’s really good.

The big story this week is ICE. Trump is pushing to expand it.
x Trump issues new Executive Order requiring the hiring of 20,000 more new ICE Gestapo troops within the next 60 days for "an intensive campaign to remove illegal aliens". www.whitehouse.gov/presidential... — StrictlyChristo 🦋🇺🇦🌻 (@strictlychristo.bsky.social) 2025-05-10T05:38:21.248Z
Congressional Republicans are pushing to protect it.
x “The notion that I or any of my colleagues ‘body slammed’ armed federal officers is absurd. DHS is lying because they know their agents were out of line.” www.nbcnews.com/politics/pol... — Rachel Maddow (@maddow.msnbc.com) 2025-05-11T01:33:01.982Z
But the clamor to get rid of it is escalating.
x If you have to wear a mask to hide your identity when doing your job, maybe consider finding a different line of work. — Al Cappuccino…☕️🇮🇹 (@alcappuccinoit.bsky.social) May 10, 2025 at 10:17 AM
No joke! The Lincoln Project reminds ICE and its abettors that if they follow illegal orders they can be held personally liable and “lose everything.”

Just look at these guys:
Those are real ICE agents but they could be anyone with a hankering to terrorize their neighbors. They’d just need a weapon that even a kid like Kyle Rittenhouse knows how to get, plus an outfit that Amazon could drop on the doorstep tomorrow: a black ICE or Immigration Agent t-shirt, tac helmet, an outfit of military-ish tactical clothing, maybe a tac vest, and a mask. And then they could just go out and grab people off the street. It’s not even “what if?” anymore.
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Police are searching for a man who apparently posed as an immigration officer before attempting to rape a woman in Brooklyn. Officials say a 51-year-old Hispanic woman was approached near Montague Street and Henry Street in Brooklyn Heights as she waited for a cab around 11 a.m. Tuesday. The victim told detectives that the man claimed to be an ICE agent and directed her to a nearby stairwell where he punched her and tried to rape her.

There’s good news. Mohsen Mahdawi, a student captured by ICE, was freed, as was Rumeysa Öztürk, after being held for six weeks. Judge Boasberg is still working to get justice for all the immigrants deported without trial to CECOT, and potentially to have them returned to the US. Judges Rodriguez and Hellerstein have both ruled that the Alien Enemies Act cannot excuse this kind of deportation because the White House’s claim that Tren de Aragua has mounted an invasion of the US, equivalent to war, stretches the truth too far. While we all wish that the wheels of justice could grind as fast as Trump can sign executive orders, still, they’re moving steadily in the right direction.

The great news this week is the new Pope Leo XIV who stands for the everyday man against the wealthy. He has specifically rebuked JD Vance’s idea that we should love some neighbors more than others. The history of the pope stretches back to Jesus’ day but Pope Leo XIV is no relic. He has already voiced concerns over the role of AI, a matter that concerns us all as DOGE attempts to use it to replace federal workers. And besides, he’s from Chicago. Ya gotta love it.
And in other papal news, Pope Francis’ final wish for the children of Gaza was that his bulletproof “popemobile” should be converted to a mobile health clinic for them.

Geography pop quiz! First, name the president of Guam.
Second question: Can you point to Mattel on the globe?
Republicans, report to detention.

Breaking news: Qatar is giving Trump a new Air Force One that he’s giving to his own presidential library. (His library will have printed material after all: the sort one finds in an airliner’s seat pocket.)
x They've now made clear the Qatari plane is officially a bribe. Trump gets to take it with him for his personal use after he leaves office. The Times is really not being clear with readers abt how prez libraries work. talkingpointsmemo.com/edblog/qatar...

Sunday Science
Trump appears to think that Martian rock samples are leverite, as in the old rockhound joke, “Yeah, that’s leverite. Leave ‘er right there.”
For more than four years, NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover has been on the prowl within Jezero Crater, a site on the Red Planet that eons ago harbored a sprawling river delta, a large, deep lake and—just maybe—ancient Martian life. (Scientific American)
Trump wants to slash the project’s budget — just a half of one percent of NASA’s budget — and leave Perseverance’s samples behind. But non-manned efforts like this are remarkably cost effective, and NASA is reluctant to “cede leadership to other nations, such as China.”

Alchemy: we haz it! Europe’s Large Hadron Collider has actually turned lead into gold. Only for a moment, though, and at huge cost.

Ever feel like you’re being watched? Even babies turn their attention to a direct gaze. A sense of being watched engages a fight-or-flight reaction: is it a predator? It changes how we think.
On a conscious level, we behave differently when we are watched. We become more prosocial, meaning we’re more likely to give and less likely to cheat or litter. Some studies have even suggested that theft or littering could be reduced merely by posting pictures of eyes... It can be very distracting. One study found that participants performed worse on a working memory task when they were presented with pictures of people looking at them compared with when they were shown pictures of people with averted eyes. The researchers concluded that a direct gaze grabs participants’ attention and diverts their attentional resources from a given task. Other studies have found that more functions, ranging from our spatial cognition to language processing abilities, are similarly taxed by a watchful stare. (Scientific American)
The knowledge that cameras are part of our modern environment could be changing our brains.

Chimpanzees can combine multiple sounds to communicate new meanings. No other animals but humans do this.
They have at least four different methods — a first seen outside of humans. For instance, they can combine sounds A and B to get a new meaning, C. Adding a sound can also modify the meaning of another sound, a bit like adding a suffix or a prefix. The order of sounds can also make a difference. A “hoo + grunt” is mostly associated with feeding or rest. A “grunt + hoo” is made mostly during travel or the merger of chimp groups. (Science News)

Today is the birth date of Harriet Quimby, the first US woman to get a pilot’s license.
Also the birthday of Robert Jarvik, inventor of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart. He’s 79 today.
