Trump would invade Greenland to fulfill Musk and Thiel dreams [1]

President Trump is doing his best to give his supporters what they wanted with the exception of lower prices on groceries. The supporters who wanted better consumer prices made the typical nickle and dime contributions they could afford, and should not really expect much, or anything for that matter.
But its a different story for those who contributed the really big bucks. They are expecting something really, really big. Like the biggest island in the world, all 836,000 square miles of it. Not to mention a large chunk of the world’s fresh water, frozen into a block a mile thick.
Trump’s bogus story, there’s always a bogus story, is that Greenland is “absolutely necessary for the United States security”. Where did he get that? Not from national security experts of course. Why would he listen to them? He never explains this any further. It is an unsupported assertion. Why does he not explain? Because there is no credible explanation.
During the Cold War with the Soviet Union Greenland was indeed essential to detecting a nuclear attack by ICBM. Now satellite surveillance blankets the globe and the radar early warning line is history and Greenland’s significance if much diminished. Most former US bases there are abandoned.
That has not stopped Trump from continuing to pursue this ill conceived venture. Now he is ordering national intelligence agencies to redirect their attentions from former adversaries like Russia to Greenland, our new number one security concern.
The real reason he wants to acquire Greenland is that Elon Musk and Peter Thiel of the far right technobro school of security analysis said to. And why do they want the US to invade Greenland in their behalf? Simple, they envision a utopian techno city unconstrained by namby pamby liberal rules and regulations where genius entrepreneurs like themselves can engage in really free enterprise. And, since they can’t really get to Mars in the next year or two, the frozen wastes of Greenland will have to be the next best place for these wackos to develop their fantasy society.
This plan, supported by Trump minions Tom Cotton and JD (SofaBoy) Vance, requires the United States to coerce or invade a NATO treaty ally to satisfy the bonkers whims of a couple of mega wealthy nerds who never grew up. The collateral damage from this would be the dissolution of NATO, the bulwark that has protected the United States, Canada, the UK, and Europe since the end of World War Two. And how would the only other antagonistic player in the Arctic feel about this?
Putin, who has designs on eastern Europe, and the Arctic would be absolutely delighted. Two birds with one stone for him. And, not even his own stones. No more viable NATO, no contest in the Arctic from the US as we run Denmark and the EU out of town.
If you are in the position of Trump and his technobuds, this all sounds pretty good, as minuscule Denmark is not in much of a position to resist at first glance. And a first glance is as far as any of these whizzes go in planning anything. Trump himself is a master of one dimensional chess. He always figures that any move he makes is the last and only move to be made. He never considers possible counter moves. But, in this case, as in others, there are going to be counter moves.
To begin with, Greenland is rough, rugged, and remote. It would be hard to invade by sea and would take weeks to get there with a landing force.They would know we were coming. The US would have to sink Denmark’s four patrol vessels in the Greenland area. That would not be too difficult. But then they would have to mount an amphibious invasion in Arctic conditions. Not something practiced every day.
And, its possible that NATO countries could contribute to some sort of impromptu defense. Consider how ill prepared Ukrainian armed civilians initially opposed mechanized forces from Russia to protect their homeland. Greenlanders are no wimps. They are a well armed society of hunters and fishermen who are tough as nails. Would they fight? Highly possible. Might not be so easy for the US to pull off.
The other option is to fly an invasion force in to take over the airport in the capitol. Once again, this move betrays long time allies, and it is likely that someone in the military or CIA would take it upon themselves to forewarn their European / UK counterparts. No surprise in that case either.
Recall what happened in Ukraine as the Russians tried to take over the airport at Kyiv. They got pulped, pulverized, and purred as they landed, all by an informal and hastily assembled defense force that was highly motivated and called together on a day’s notice.
Then, if the US did manage to land and seize the airport at Nuuk are they going to go about killing all the local police and militia that turn out to oppose them? We would really look like the Russians invading Ukraine. At this point, the US would have no allies anywhere in the world and any treaty they had ever signed would be totally worthless.
What’s more, we would have only one city of 20,000 under control and another 30,000 residents who live in small communities mostly inaccessible by road that would each have to be invaded by air. This is grim.
Not only would this finally separate the United States from all of its former friends and allies, it might well provoke a split within our own military and intelligence community who have sworn to uphold the constitution. And it is all to fulfill a literal pipe dream of a handful of ultra wealthy wackos.
