A new Berkeley / IGS poll was just released checking in on the pResident’s job approval rating among Californians. While he’s clearly not going to get great ratings from the Golden State, it’s still interesting, and heartening, to see how low he’s gotten, and how fast he’s gotten there.

The latest Berkeley IGS Poll of California registered voters finds President Donald Trump’s job approval rating at historically low levels. Just 30% of the voters polled say they approve of Trump’s performance, while 68% disapprove.

The poll finds voters across this state are highly critical of the changes the President has been making to the way the federal government operates, with 63% opposing them, 52% strongly. Californians also say they oppose the changes that the President has been making to the U.S.’s foreign policies and its relationships with other countries by a similar 66% to 31% margin, 56% of whom are strongly opposed.

The report shows that Trump’s lowest approval rating during his first term was 9 points higher at 39%. That’s approaching Darth Cheney’s abysmal numbers from the 2000s. The previous low for any president at this stage of his term was Shrub in May of 2001, prior to 9/11, when his approval stood at 42%.

Adding to (or subtracting from, I suppose) the GOP’s ephemeral and gloomy hopes for the biggest electoral prize in the nation, the Sac Bee has this to say regarding the poll:

Republicans in the state had some optimism that Trump and the GOP did better in last year’s elections than in the recent past. The poll suggested any such gains were elusive. Institute of Governmental Studies co-director Eric Schickler said the survey suggested “the gains he made in the last election have not translated into broader support for his policies among the state’s electorate.” “As such,” he said, “they do not do much to further Republican hopes that last November was the start of a broader rebound for the party in the state.”

President Trump’s current 2 nd term job ratings compared to the initial ratings of other U.S. Presidents, including those given Trump in his first term (among California registered voters)

PRESIDENT APPROVE % DISAPPROVE % NO OPINION % TRUMP 4/25 30 68 2 BIDEN 4/21 62 34 4 TRUMP 3/17 39 61 * OBAMA 3/09 65 21 14 BUSH II 5/01 42 44 14 CLINTON 5/93 50 46 4 BUSH I 4/89 61 30 9 REAGAN 4/81 74 18 8 CARTER 3/77 68 20 12 FORD 10/74 55 36 9

Sample size: 6,201 registered voters. Sampling error +2/-2. Crosstabs are available here.

This should be good news to everyone here, if not terribly unexpected. Trump’s horrible actions are dragging him down, fast. Our coalescing and strengthening resistance is having an effect. We should start to see other state level polling soon, with what I expect will be similar results. Hopefully this will inspire Governor Newsom to stiffen up his spine and start acting like a goddamn Democrat again.
