Here is an update on the NASA Psyche mission, which was launched on Oct 13, 2023, to orbit and study the metallic asteroid 16 Psyche beginning in 2029.

NASA engineers are troubleshooting an issue with the solar electric hall-effect thrusters on the Psyche spacecraft. A drop in pressure in the line that feeds xenon gas to the thrusters (from 36 psi to 26 psi) has caused the thrusters to shut down. If a fix is not found by mid-June, NASA has an option to use a back-up fuel line. science.nasa.gov/...

Here is the mission timeline and the current location of the spacecraft.

Hall-effect thrusters work by ionizing atoms of a gas like Xenon, accelerating them to high speeds and expelling them to generate a gentle steady thrust. The Psyche Hall-effect Thruster exerts about the same amount of pressure you’d feel holding three quarters in your hand, but it can operate continuously for years and most of the energy comes from the Sun, not from burning fuels.

Now let’s solve today’s puzzle composed in 1868 by noted American chess composer Charles Gilberg (1835 - 1898). He was the author of the books Crumbs From the Chess-Board and The Fifth American Chess Congress: New York 1880.
