Pete Hegsbeth is proposing/threatening to cut 20% of the top U.S. generals. I linked this to a CNN story, but you can find it anywhere.
Is anybody else uncomfortable with this now, under this administration?
In any normal time, I would find this to be a positive goal. Seriously, how many generals does a peacetime nation need? Further, the old, “If you build it, you will use it,” theory is at least somewhat appropriate here. To prove themselves worthy of advancement, a military record requires combat experience. Plus, military costs are already burdensome, especially considering what other Federal programs are on the cutting block.
But, now, this could easily be a set-up to weed out the non-MAGA forces and create a military loyal to one man, the Donald. This comes, of course, after the termination of the chair of the joint chiefs of staff, General Charles Q. Brown, Jr. Allegedly, he was too woke, whatever that might mean in this administration’s mind.
Retired General Dan Crane has been nominated as Brown’s replacement. Presuming his nomination survives Senate hearings, Trump will have, “His man,” in position to evaluate which other high-ranking generals will be let go. Does this not position the administration to create a loyalist military leadership?
I do not know the man, General Crane. I am not casting aspersions on him. He may turn out to be the adult in the room everyone is hoping finally has a place in the Trump administration. But, he may not. There is scant evidence that Trump is picking his leadership team for their ability to convince him otherwise when he might be making a mistake.
As Alfred E. Neuman famously said, “What? Me worry?”
Yes, more than a little bit.
