My name is Mosab Abu Toha and here are a few facts that everyone needs to know about me before mentioning my name:

- I was born in a refugee camp in Gaza City in 1992.

- I was wounded in January 2009 in an air strike that killed six people. I was 16 years old. Read my poem “The Wounds.”

- I founded the Edward Said Library in Gaza (two branches now destroyed by Israel) in 2017 and 2019.

- I have never been part of any political or military factions in Palestine or abroad. I don’t support any. I only support my people’s human rights to freedom and self-determination.

- The first time I left Gaza was in 2019 and it was to attend a fellowship at Harvard University.

- I have a BA in English from the Islamic University of Gaza.

- I taught English from 2017 until 2023.

- I finished my MFA degree at Syracuse University in 2023.

- I lost 31 members of my family on October 13, 2023 in one air strike on their home in Gaza City, including two first cousins with their husbands and all their children. (I lost dozens more relatives and friends and students.)

- My house was bombed on October 28, 2023. We were fortunate that we had moved to Jabalia Camp three weeks earlier.

- I am a father of three children and I was detained by the Israeli forces in Gaza while trying to evacuate in November 2023. I was released because they determined that I was not a threat and not aligned with Hamas, and an Israeli soldier told me, “We are sorry about the mistake. You are going home.”

- I identify as a Palestinian refugee chronicling his people’s lives under siege and war but also his people’s struggle for justice and dignity.

- I do not care how you see me or my work, because if you are racist, you will fail to see beauty in others. A racist even cannot find beauty in themselves.

- I pray for two things: Truth and Justice. I know that whoever detests justice and truth will not like whatever I say.
