To Kill a Democracy [1]

The things going on in the United States today are things I had never imagined I would see. And as a Black American woman, that’s saying a lot. I knew about the racism and the sexism and a lot of isms, but I honestly thought Americans had more pride, however misplaced in their country and their reputation.
I mistakenly thought that being “The leader of the free world”, “The Beacon of Democracy”, “The longest living democracy” amongst others were titles that they would strive to hold on to, even if our democracy was flawed and lacking but at least the reputation was there. How wrong I was.
It didn’t take much to topple our fragile Democracy, not much at all, just hate and anger. A desire for revenge against perceived grievances so deep, that Americans are willingly destroying their country to satisfy their thirst for revenge. Revenge against what one might ask? Against seeing other people, they consider “not real Americans” succeed. That’s it. That’s all it took.
One might think, that “not real Americans” would be a reference to immigrants, especially in the light of mass deportations, but there are other groups that fall into the “not real Americans” category; Black folks, Native Americans, members of the LGBTQIA community, those who are not Christians, anyone whose ethnicity is not of “European descent” as the “real Americans” are labelling themselves these days.
And while they call themselves patriots, there is little or no patriotism in what they are doing. No respect for the rule of law, no respect for the constitution, no respect for the declaration of independence, the two things they are striving to do is 1) Fight against this nebulous idea of anti-white sentiment and 2) protect their alternate Christian values. I know people will say it’s also money, the rich, big Corp… yeah they are profiting (so far) from this movement they are not the ones leading the charge. Besides, I’m really talking about the average American, those within 77 millions who voted for him and those that stayed home and let this happen. Without them, we wouldn’t be here.
And while people may say, they are turning against this regime, I would point out that they are in fact not turning against the regime, but against the effects of certain policies that’s all. Even if we were to win in the future, will that erase the knowledge we have of all this hate brewing under the surface? A hate that was kept under wraps for centuries?
I will never be able to look at my country with the same eyes again, and once more coming from a Black American woman that is saying a lot, for I was under no delusions to begin with. I don’t know how many more generations it will take, for this country to accept us as “real Americans”, for it seems an impossible dream right now.
Dreams were what shaped this country, dreams of freedom, dreams of liberty, dreams of equality, dreams of the pursuit of happiness… but not one of these dreams has ever become reality, not a single one. In fact for those of us not regarded as “Real Americans” they have been turned into nightmares.
Turns out, all that was needed to kill a democracy, to kill the greatest democracy was hate…. Such a small word, hate. Just that, hate.
