Let’s just drop all talk of impeachment [1]

To be clear, the things that Trump has already done far exceed any reasonable standard for impeachment & removal from office. He has imprisoned people without due process. He has suspended enforcement of protections from corruption. He has openly informed persons (foreign & domestic) with policy objectives that the system is now “pay to play.” And the list goes on.

However, the modern GOP is much different from the GOP that advised Nixon to resign or be removed. (Incidentally, there is a significant effort underway to rehabilitate Nixon). I think that Trump could literally nuke an American city & openly send people to gas chambers & much of today’s Republican Party would look the other way. There is no reality where the Senate produces the 2/3 majority needed for removal.

Talk of impeachment only motivates Trump supporters & we just can’t take that chance with the 2026 Senate map.

The only circumstance where I would advocate for impeachment is if we trounce the Republicans in ‘26 AND get commitments behind closed doors of the 2/3 vote requirement.

We need to focus on the crimes rather than any potential “punishment.” We need to promulgate the truth to anybody who will listen. I like to say that there are very few truly evil people but there are far too many people who occasionally engage in acts of evil. We need to focus on the “acts” rather than the man.

A great many people today have become numb to the news. Many people get their news from “influencers” rather than media organizations. Too few people have the skills to analyze their preferred influencers for hidden bias. I have a coworker, a young black man who leans right of center. He gets his news analysis from a lawyer online who he says presents both sides & then presents her analysis. I think he is a good guy but I question his ability to discern bias from this lawyer. After all, it’s a lawyer’s job to convince you that their analysis is rational even when it is completely false.

Drop the “us vs them” approach. It is not about Democrats vs Republicans at this point. It needs to be about who we are as Americans!

I might even suggest the avoidance of using Trump’s name. Just go with: “do you understand that the current administration just (implemented XYZ policy) & do you really think that’s a good idea?”

At this point, I don’t really care about punishing Trump for all of his crimes & offenses. I just want to try & preserve some semblance of the ideals put forth in The Declaration of Independence & the best aspirations of what it has meant to be an American.
