DEMOCRACY IS WORTH DEFENDING
Janet clutched her worn textbook, hiding its pages. Uniformed figures patrolled the school, searching for forbidden knowledge. Her grandfather, a printer before the Nazis seized power in Germany, had whispered stories of choice, of open debate, of a government accountable to its people.
Now, only approved texts were allowed. Janet's friend, Jack, had been taken last week, rumored to have questioned the Party line. Fear coiled in her stomach, but the image of her grandfather's defiant eyes flickered in her mind. He'd told her, "A single dissenting voice is a threat to tyranny."
Later that day, when asked to pledge unwavering loyalty to Project 2025, Janet didn't. Her voice trembled, but she said, "I believe in...freedom."
