Happy Cinco de Mayo, Shady folks! I don’t suppose I really HAVE to do a “Today is...” section, since this is going to overshadow everything else and will own Cat TV down in the comments. Since I already have the websites pulled up, I’ll do a brief one anyway.

chloris creator put up an informative diary this morning. No synopsis. It’s short, go read the whole thing. We’ll be here when you get back.

Don't fly in to Newark. First of many warnings.

Newark Radar Failure Left Controllers Blind for 90 Seconds

Air traffic controllers guiding planes bound for Newark Liberty International Airport lost radar and radio communication for more than a minute early last week before flights at the key hub were snarled for days, according to people familiar with the matter. The outage of those key systems occurred on April 28 and lasted nearly 90 seconds, said the people, who asked not to be identified discussing the matter because it isn’t public. Following the incident, multiple employees were placed on trauma leave, the people said. The incident and resulting reduction in staffing contributed to a week of flight delays and cancellations at Newark airport that pushed United Airlines Holdings Inc. to cut 35 daily round trips at the key hub, its biggest for international departures and a primary gateway for domestic flights.✂️

WineRev pointed this out in his Good and Goofy post in this morning’s GNR. It’s worth repeating and Lone Star Left just made my “Regional news sources” list. Thanks, WineRev and Lone Star Left!

Maga's Very Bad Night In Texas

✂️A statewide rejection of extremism. Last night, voters across Texas sent a message loud enough to rattle the far-right out of their echo chambers: we’re done with your culture wars, your book bans, and your crusade against public schools. Voters chose community over chaos, educators over agitators, and progress over extremism. The local elections weren’t just a series of wins but a sweep. MAGA-backed candidates got absolutely trounced across the state. This was the result of deep organizing, years of work by local Democrats, and voters who are fed up with the far-right hijacking of school boards and city councils to push their agenda. Texas isn’t turning blue overnight, but make no mistake: the MAGA movement had a very bad night, and the momentum is shifting.✂️

I stumbled across this in News from the States and had to include it because, even though I only lived there through college* (or did college live through me?), I still in some way think of it as the home I don’t want to live in.

‘Courage is contagious’: About 600 gather for Fargo May Day event

A day for bringing attention to organized labor and worker rights extended into an opportunity to denounce President Donald Trump’s agenda and expansion of executive power. Around 600 demonstrators attended a May Day event in Fargo-Moorhead Thursday. Holding signs that addressed topics from demands for due process for deported immigrants to concerns about cuts to Social Security, they stood in the rain on the Veterans Memorial Bridge. “This is one way we show our support of workers and the rule of law,” said Rick Loftus, organizer of the Indivisible Fargo chapter, also known as Fearless. ✂️

I’m really impressed that 600 people showed up to protest against MAGA, although Fargo is the most moderate part of North Dakota.

* I lived in the Fargo area for everything I remember until I moved to the Twin Cities just before my 25th birthday...

I’m finding a lot in my Blue Sky feed this morning. I will try to not make this an all Blue Sky diary.

x Lucky for Donald that he got those tacky polyurethane medallions (later spraypainted gold) he vulgarly littered the walls and fireplace in the Oval Office with before tariffs kicked in. Because they are all made in China.

Trump Backs Away from ‘Pope Trump’ Image

President Donald Trump says he knew nothing about an artificially generated image of him dressed as the pope that was posted to his Truth Social account over the weekend,” USA Today reports. Said Trump: “I had nothing to do with it. Somebody made up a picture of me dressed like the pope and they put it out on the internet. That’s not me that did it, I have no idea where it came from, maybe it was AI, but I know nothing about it, I just saw it last evening.” He added: “They can’t take a joke. The Catholics loved it.”

x People tend to dismiss VP Pence’s actions on J6: he was just doing his job, why should he get any credit for simply sticking to the letter of the law? But if it was so easy to do, why was he one of the very few in his party to do it? apnews.com/article/penc...

Trump’s Perfect Storm that Could Sink the American Economy

Donald Trump has steered the American economy into a perfect storm. In the book, film, and now in real life, a rare combination of destructive forces comes together and magnifies the damage. This storm could break the U.S. economy. Trump’s tariffs are the most destructive force. Their first-order damages begin by arbitrarily driving up the prices of every product and input we import, followed by price hikes on most competing products and inputs made here. This will leave less money for everything else, depressing growth and jobs even as inflation accelerates—a textbook definition of stagflation. And these first-order costs are compounded by retaliatory tariffs by the primary targets of Trump’s levies, further slowing jobs, wages, and growth. Six months ago, our economy grew at a healthy 2.8 percent rate, and inflation had eased sharply. Now, Trump’s policies have ushered in rising prices and the first stage of a recession. ✂️

Japan denies using its $1 trillion in US Treasuries as a trade threat

Japan has denied any plan to threaten the United States with the sale of over $1 trillion in US Treasuries during trade talks, Finance Minister Katsunobu Kato said on Sunday in Milan. The denial came two days after Kato appeared on national television suggesting the holdings could be used as a negotiation card. He clarified the remarks after reporters pressed him for a clearer stance on the government’s position. Speaking at a press conference, Kato explained that his earlier comments were in response to a question asking whether Japan could offer reassurance to Washington by promising not to offload its Treasury holdings easily. “My comments were made in response to a question whether Japan could, as a bargaining tool in trade negotiations, explicitly reassure Washington it wouldn’t sell its Treasury holdings easily,” Kato said. “The comments weren’t meant to suggest selling Treasury holdings.” In Friday’s interview, Kato had said that Japan’s US Treasury holdings, which is the largest in the world, could be used as a “card” in trade negotiations, as Cryptopolitan reported.✂️

Punchbowl News

Lawmakers concerned about Trump admin handling sensitive materials

Most lawmakers on Capitol Hill are worried about the security of sensitive materials being in the hands of the Trump administration, our latest survey found. More than three-quarters of senior Hill staff (76%) said their boss was concerned about how the Trump administration handles and distributes sensitive materials following the Signal chat controversy. That includes 100% of Democrats who took the survey and 52% of Republican staffers. The survey was conducted in the weeks leading up to President Donald Trump’s abrupt decision to fire National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and his deputy Alex Wong last week. Waltz, who is now Trump’s U.N. ambassador nominee, was at the center of the SignalGate scandal. Among survey responses, 84% said their lawmaker was concerned about Waltz adding The Atlantic Editor-in-Chief Jeffrey Goldberg to the Signal chat that included discussions of sensitive defense plans.✂️

I expect a sternly worded letter most any minute now.

Revenge of the Fifth

Not had enough Star Wars on May the 4th? Thinking of stepping over to the Dark Side following Star Wars Day? Think you’d be a great Sith? Well keep swinging those lightsabers, Revenge of the fifth is here to keep the force going with another Star Wars-themed observance! Although some fans believe that ‘Revenge of the Sixth’ would make more sense since the number sounds a bit more like ‘sith’, it’s the fifth which has stuck since its the day after the fourth.✂️

I still haven’t really gone through last night’s Shade, so I’m sure this was used…

Yep, it was! Curse you, TCG!!! Light sabers at dawn. Try this.

National Cartoonists Day

Let's be honest, for many of us, skipping to the cartoons in the newspaper is a guilty pleasure, and cartoon strips have given us many beloved and iconic characters, such as Garfield, and Calvin and Hobbes. May 5th is National Cartoonist Day, a worldwide celebration of cartoonists and their work. The National Cartoonist Society declared the date in the 1990s to promote support for the cartooning industry, and to recognize the impact they have had on society. The date of May 5th was chosen to recognize the first appearance (in color) of the mischievous cartoon character "The Yellow Kid" in the New York World newspaper on May 5, 1895. The character was created by comic strip artist Richard F. Outcault, and was featured in his cartoon titled "At the Circus in Hogan's Alley"✂️

Out of respect for Tom Tomorrow, I’ll just post a link to his Daily Kos diary rather than posting the image.
