RIP Dad, Ten Years ago today [1]

Today, May 4, 2025, is the tenth anniversary of the passing of my father.

I had been his caregiver for the last fifteen years of his life following an infection after open heart surgery. Today, that surgery might have been done via angioplasty and catheters, but then he had to have his chest cut open. After surgery, he developed a serious infection resulting is loss of most of his breastbone and much of his chest muscle tissue. He wasn’t expected to survive, but since I refused to permit him to be taken off life support, he eventually recovered and lived another fifteen years.

It is also the 31st anniversary of my cancer surgery, when I had my colon cancer tumor removed and got a permanent colostomy. I am often told by my doctors and nurses when they learn I’ve been such a long-term ostomate that it is very unusual for someone to live so long with a colostomy. It constantly reminds me of how different I am from those around me.

And it is Star Wars day.

Here is a video of me giving a eulogy at my father’s funeral, followed below by some photos of Dad.
