Trump orders reopening of notorious Alcatraz prison
Donald Trump says he is directing his government to reopen and expand Alcatraz, the former prison on an island off the coast of California. In a message on his Truth Social site on Sunday, President Trump said that "for too long America has been plagued by vicious, violent, and repeat criminal offenders". The reopening of Alcatraz would serve as a "symbol of law, order, and justice," he said. The prison closed because it was too expensive to continue operating, according to the Federal Bureau of Prison website. It was nearly three times more costly to operate than any other federal prison, largely due to its island location.

Trump says he won't seek a third term
US President Donald Trump has denied that he is considering a third presidential term, a move which experts agree is banned under the US Constitution. "I'll be an eight-year president, I'll be a two-term president.” The Constitution's 22nd Amendment says that "no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice". "It's something that, to the best of my knowledge, you're not allowed to do. I don't know if that's constitutional” said trump.

Portugal announces the expulsion of 18,000 foreigners ahead of a national election
LISBON, Portugal (AP) — Portugal’s caretaker government plans to expel some 18,000 foreigners living in the country without authorization, a minister said Saturday in the buildup to a national election. Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro said the center-right government will issue approximately 18,000 notifications to people in the country illegally to leave. The minister said officials will begin next week by asking some 4,500 foreigners to leave voluntarily within 20 days. Portugal will hold an early general election on May 18. Prime Minister Luis Montenegro called the snap ballot in March after his minority government led by his conservative Social Democratic Party lost a confidence vote in Parliament and stood down. Portugal has been caught up in the rising European tide of populism, with its far-right Chega party surging into third place in last year’s election.

trump says he ‘doesn’t rule out’ using military force to control Greenland
Donald trump would not rule out using military force to gain control of Greenland, the world’s largest island and an autonomous territory within Denmark, a fellow Nato member with the US. In an interview on NBC’s Meet The Press on Sunday, Trump was asked whether he would rule out using force against the territory. Danish PM tells US ‘you cannot annex another country’ on visit to Greenland “I don’t rule it out. I don’t say I’m going to do it, but I don’t rule out anything. No, not there. We need Greenland very badly. Greenland is a very small amount of people, which we’ll take care of, and we’ll cherish them, and all of that. But we need that for international security,” Trump said.

Putin expresses ‘hope’ that nuclear weapons will not be needed in Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said that there has so far been no need to use nuclear weapons in Ukraine, expressing “hope” that they will not be required. Putin said his country had enough “strength and means” to bring the three-year war, sparked by Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, to a “logical conclusion with the outcome Russia requires”. His comments were part of a documentary marking his quarter century in power by state television channel Rossiya 1 that was released on Sunday. Responding to a question from journalist Pavel Zarubin about the Russian response to Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory, Putin said: “There has been no need to use those [nuclear] weapons … and I hope they will not be required.” His comments came ahead of his unilaterally declared three-day ceasefire over May 8-10 to mark the 80th anniversary of the victory of the Soviet Union and its allies over Nazi Germany in World War II, an initiative that he claimed would test Kyiv’s readiness for long-term peace.

Nearly 290,000 Gaza children on ‘the brink of death’ amid Israeli blockade
More than 3,500 children below the age of five years “face imminent death by starvation”, Gaza’s Government Media Office (GMO) has said, adding that some 70,000 children are being hospitalised in the enclave due to severe malnutrition amid more than two months of total Israeli blockade. “Under this systematic blockade, more than 3,500 children under the age of five face imminent death by starvation, while approximately 290,000 children are on the brink of death,” the GMO statement on Telegram said on Sunday. “At a time when 1.1 million children daily lack the minimum nutritional requirements for survival, this crime is being perpetrated by the ‘Israeli’ occupation using starvation as a weapon, amid shameful international silence,” it added. At least 57 Palestinians have starved to death, causing global outrage, but that has failed to convince Israel to allow entry of aid into the enclave of 2.3 million people.

India cuts off water flow to Pakistan from dam on river Chenab
India’s actions came within hours of Pakistan’s testing its surface-to-surface ballistic missile on Saturday. India has cut off water flow to Pakistan from the Baglihar dam on the Chenab river and is also preparing to taper down runoffs from the Kishanganga project on the Jhelum, following through on its decisions not to allow a “single drop” from going to the neighbouring country from the Indus rivers. After a week of discussions and hydrological testing, India began de-silting operations in the Baglihar dam and lowered sluice gates, reducing downstream flow to Pakistan by up to 90%, while similar operations have been planned for the Kishanganga dam, an official from the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation said on Sunday.

Trump says he is considering Stephen Miller for national security adviser
May 4 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday that Stephen Miller, his deputy chief of staff, was a frontrunner to be potentially named as national security adviser following the departure of Mike Waltz. Trump ousted Waltz on Thursday and named Secretary of State Marco Rubio to the position on an interim basis. While U.S. officials say they expect Trump to be in no hurry to fill the job on a permanent basis, a number of candidates have emerged. "I think he sort of indirectly already has that job. Because he has a lot to say about a lot of things. He's a very valued person in the administration, Stephen," said Trump.
