Good morning, Newdists! First, I may or may not be joining y’all this morning. It’s the BF’s birthday today, and yesterday we went to Dallas for karaoke with his/our friends, but the catch was that we had to drive back the same night (he still has work today). I’m writing this diary from the passenger seat, now that my driving shift is over. The GPS says we’ll get home after 3am, so we’ll see if I can get myself up! Apologies if I’m not around this morning.
(Before anybody makes the obvious driving/trucking joke—I already made it. I told the BF this morning that, instead of my usual hauls, I was transporting 200 pounds of birthday boy 😂)
In the midst of celebrating, I’ve had my eye on some Texas school board elections that took place yesterday. Exciting, I know. Well, actually, it is—suburban Texas school districts have been near the center of the recent wave of book banning, anti-trans bullshit, and other assorted insanity. Katy (a suburb west of Houston), in particular, has been pretty notorious for this as of late, but my own Fort Bend ISD (in the suburbs southwest of Houston) hasn’t been too far behind. Well, the results are in, and they’re downright encouraging.
x Texas conservatives who've championed book bans & anti-LGBT policies suffered big losses tonight in school board races. And They seem to have lost their working majorities to pass their policies in big school boards. I tracked these results in FOUR boards tonight. So a 🧵 on each ICYMI. — Taniel (@taniel.bsky.social) May 3, 2025 at 11:57 PM
I’ve been very cynical lately about a lot of things, but the ouster of multiple right-wing nutjobs from school boards across the state has been genuinely uplifting. Little rays of hope, peeking through! A sign of elections to come? I certainly hope so.
What’s on your mind this morning? As always, it’s an open thread!
