One of the standard refrains in these parts is that “the youth vote” is the necessary ingredient to restore the Democratic Party and defeat Trump’s authoritarian efforts. Well…..

Every week I travel to Penn Station to meet my wife who’s returning from her Washington job with the Federal Government. While waiting for her train, I’m surrounded by dozens of young people who are...dancing. Doesn’t matter what day it is, the kids are there in the evening. According to the New York Times, they can’t afford to rent dance studios and the concourse has the space, lighting and reflectivity needed along with being free.

The point is, this is what they’re spending their time doing. In the midst of a constitutional crisis with generational implications, they’re not huddled over their keyboards blogging about politics or huddled in coffee shops and bars plotting revolutionary opposition. They enjoy dancing and that’s what they’re spending their time doing.

I recently participated in a call with Congresswoman Kristen McDonald Rivet who in 2024 won a House seat in a district that voted for Trump. Her viewpoint is that framing a campaign message about Trump and authoritarianism is a wasted effort, because most voters (young and old) are focused on their personal lives (work, school, kids) and don’t have the time or inclination to think about broad political issues.

Conclusion: If you want to engage young voters in significant numbers to overturn the House and Senate Republican majorities, you’re going to have to make the current issues relevant to them in words they can relate to. Not all of them are in college, so they don’t have college loan debt. Some still live at home so they’re not thinking of mortgages and apartment rental costs. And some just want to dance...
