What Are We Doing, Guys? MTFU!! [1]

This meme says a lot.
Therapists are dealing with an overwhelming number of victims. I mean the term victim in the sense that what has happened to them was unexpected, unwarranted, unprovoked and very much unnecessary — except in the eyes of their attacker.
It isn’t just spousal or intimate partner abuse, it is clients who have a sense of being put into a box by someone’s words. Those words were, again, unexpected, unwarranted, unprovoked and very much unnecessary — except in the eyes of their attacker.
Goldwater Rule aside, we (therapists, counselors, practitioners) must not remain silent about this any longer.
While we want to be open, agreeable, positive and supportive, we also must speak to the need to be human, to create boundaries, to not tolerate abuse, to not reside in a state of perpetual helplessness, to not suffer in silence.
We are living through a moment of violent thought, feeling, words and behaviors; violent reactions, all characterized by an attacker or assailant coming after people without any kind of warning, is the fruition of this derangement. They’re just attacking, because they feel like it. We are now on the lookout for unexpected, unwarranted, unprovoked and very much unnecessary words, actions, intimations and threats — except in the eyes of the attacker.
Victims require support, but they also must find their own voice, their own legs, their own arms and their own motivation.
Sooner or later, either there is resolution through leaving the abuser, permanently, or there is a loss of life. The statistics bear this harsh truth out.
