I regret having to say I must give up doing the ONDs. I am no longer physically able to do six a month, they require too much stamina. I also have too much brain fog.
Far West Girl has graciously stepped in and offered to take four days in May, the tenth and seventeenth for Science Saturday, and the seventh and twenty-first Wednesdays. But she has taken those days only. We still need permanent people for the first and third Wednesdays and the second and third Saturdays, from June onward.
We also need people to take the first, third, and fifth Fridays long-term. I will do them on May sixteenth, and thirtieth unless someone takes them. I am sorry to make a fuss but better to admit I bit off more than I could chew than leave the ONDs in a mess.

Drones attacked a vessel carrying aid to Gaza on Friday in international waters off Malta, the group organizing the shipment said, in the latest confrontation over efforts to send assistance to the Palestinian territory devastated by nearly 19 months of war. A nearby tugboat responded to a distress call from the Conscience, which authorities said experienced a fire that was brought under control. The vessel was carrying 12 crew members and four civilians, the Maltese government said, adding that those aboard refused to leave the ship. The group was safe and no serious injuries were reported, it said. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition accused Israel of attacking its ship. The group did not provide evidence for that claim or to show that the fire was caused by drones, but in a video it shared an explosion could be heard. Another video showed a fire blazing. ***

President Donald Trump today asked Congress to make massive and unprecedented cuts to the 2026 budgets of major federal science agencies. The request calls for cutting spending by 37% at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and more than 50% at the National Science Foundation (NSF), the country’s two major science funders. The White House also seeks to eliminate most federal spending on climate and ecological research and would cut NASA’s science budget by more than half, killing major planetary missions. Other agencies would face similarly harsh cuts. ***

Neighborhoods across the Southeast need to be on the look out for venomous Asian needle ants this summer - and be warned its sting can be deadly. People may suffer from an allergic reaction after a sting that can send them to the hospital without treatment. Symptoms can include difficulty breathing, a weak or rapid heart rate, vomiting, hives, fainting and tongue swelling. We are now considering it a medically important pest," Dan Suiter, an Orkin distinguished professor of Urban Entomology at the University of Georgia, told Fox Weather this week. He said that the number of calls from individuals who suffered from the reaction, also known as anaphylaxis, have prompted the shift. Last year, Suiter said he received three such calls. ***

The first driverless semis have started running regular longhaul routes
Driverless trucks are officially running their first regular long-haul routes, making roundtrips between Dallas and Houston. On Thursday, autonomous trucking firm Aurora announced it launched commercial service in Texas under its first customers, Uber Freight and Hirschbach Motor Lines, which delivers time- and temperature-sensitive freight. Both companies conducted test runs with Aurora, including safety drivers to monitor the self-driving technology dubbed “Aurora Driver.” Aurora’s new commercial service will no longer have safety drivers. "We founded Aurora to deliver the benefits of self-driving technology safely, quickly, and broadly, said Chris Urmson, CEO and co-founder of Aurora, in a release on Thursday. “Now, we are the first company to successfully and safely operate a commercial driverless trucking service on public roads.” ***

The Trump administration has ordered the closure of 25 scientific centers that monitor US waters for flooding and drought, and manage supply levels to ensure communities around the country don’t run out of water. The United States Geological Service (USGS) water science centers’ employees and equipment track levels and quality in ground and surface water with thousands of gauges. The data it produces plays a critical role across the economy to protect human life, protect property, maintain water supplies and help clean up chemical or oil spills. The targeted centers are part of a larger network, and the Trump administration based its decision to make cuts on leases near expiration, not scientific reasoning, said Kyla Bennett, director of science policy with the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility non-profit that is tracking the issue. The administration has not indicated a plan to fill the holes left by those that closed. ***

The US Geological Survey said its epicentre was 219km (136 miles) from Ushuaia, Argentina - the world's most southerly city. The tsunami warning was issued for Chile's remote Magallanes region and the Chilean Antarctic Territory, with precautionary measures also taken in Argentina's Tierro del Fuego region. ***

Protesters rallied nationwide on Thursday in support of workers’ and immigrants’ rights in the latest round of demonstrations against Donald Trump and his administration. May Day, commemorated as international workers’ day, comes after two massive days of protests in April – 5 April’s hands off rallies and 19 April’s day of action – drew millions to the streets across the country. The 1 May protests were supported by hundreds of organizations and set to take place in nearly 1,000 cities, organizers said, with a focus on rallying against the Trump administration and “billionaire profiteers”. I went to a march from the State Capitol to the Federal Building in Honolulu. I estimate there were 1000 or more there. So many protesters showed up they would not all fit in the plaza but flowed around the block. Union members showed up in groups wearing union shirts or even uniforms in the case of the firefighters. At the rally after the march everyone sang the chorus to "Solidarity Forever." Not the verses, I am sorry to say.
