Canada Has Resumed Advertising in My Elevator in Phoenix [1]

In March, I wrote a diary about how the Canadian government started advertising anti-tariff ads on my elevator displays in Phoenix. In my condo complex, we have elevators with digital displays that carry ads, news items, trivia, etc. I learned then that this was part of a broader based ad campaign in the US:

Canada is trying to persuade Americans to speak out against President Trump’s trade war by launching an ad campaign in 12 red-leaning states, pushing anti-tariff messages and reminding them that “nobody will win” with the approach coming from the White House.

This went on for a few weeks in my elevator. However, yesterday I was delighted to see that Canada has a fresh new set of ads for my elevator:

These ads are straightforward, easy to read, and easy to understand. Again, I am mystified why the Canadian government, and not the Democratic party, is sending these messages. Don’t get me wrong—I appreciate our Canadian allies to the north. Apparently, they smell blood in the water and are rubbing salt into the wounds here. I just wish whoever was in charge of these ads would contact the DNC with instructions on how to do this simple and effective task...or perhaps Chuck Schumer with his crafty pen.

The NY Times wrote an article about this ad campaign a few weeks ago:

The advertising campaign is another sign of how the neighbors to the north are responding to President Trump’s provocations, be it his tariff threats or his musings about annexing their country as the 51st state. The Canadians are coming in elbows up and sticks high, to borrow from the true common language between Canadians and Pittsburghers — hockey. “It’s interesting to see Canada, which to the average American has been a passive partner, take this tough guy stance,” said Nick Canada, a doctoral student in rhetoric at the University of Pittsburgh who, alas, grew up in northern Florida. “The billboards are almost militaristic in style, like you’d see on a bumper sticker. They’re piercing this veil of ignorance of the world stage and condensing this huge problem into a very tangible, understandable phrase.” The ad campaign, which focuses on 12 states, is an attempt to reach Americans who are likely to be affected by increased prices for Canadian steel, oil, whiskey, and other goods and services that have been hit with reciprocal tariffs. It encourages Americans to think of tariffs as something more familiar and deeply unpopular — a tax. A government spokesman called it “an educational campaign.” “It’s a little poking you with a stick,” Mr. Canada said of the billboards. “‘They really sold this to you and you bought it, so here’s a little reminder of what’s coming.’ It’s a good reading of the suburbs.”

You go, Canada! Meanwhile, I’ll be pondering if my MAGA neighbors will be taking the stairs.
