Lawrence O'Donnell had a better title with "Donny Two Dolls."
Trump didn't like the movie either.
The whole story, this time, is at the New York Post. They picked up on a remark that Trump made at a cabinet meeting.
"You know, somebody said, 'Oh, the shelves are going to be empty.' Well, maybe children will have two dolls instead of 30 and maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more than they would normally."
This was after the reporter had asked Trump about talking to China's Xi Jinping.
O'Donnell had a segment with two young girls, who understood tariffs better than Donald Trump. They asked him to get prices back down, because their Barbies cost too much now.
The Port of Los Angeles has already seen a drop of 35% in containers going through the port. Container bookings from China have dropped 60%. Ocean carriers have dropped their sailings by 25%.
Jay Foreman, CEO of Basic Fun, said he paused shipments of Tonka trucks, Care Bears and other toys, hoping that his warehouse stock will keep up with sales for a few months. Then toys will start disappearing from shelves. He didn't have any other plans to deal with when his warehouse ran out.
Looking at what is happening with toys is symptomatic of what is happening with other products, but what is different is Christmas. There is a four month lead time where sellers want to know the prices and quantity they will have to work with. Right now, there is no planning possible.
China makes anywhere from 70% to 95% of the world's toys. Children's Christmas experience just got 145% more expensive. That's if there is any Christmas at all. There may not be any toys to sell and give. What will be available will be high priced.
We can thank Donny Two Dolls for that.
